Thank you Dona for your information too. I enjoy meeting "cousins" and always appreciate having their information. This morning I received some fax copies of the Bilbrey/Hawks/Oberfelt family information pages from a bible that dates back to the very early 1800s. Ask hubby if there is any connection to the Hawks, Looney, Oberfelt families in his family. Keep in touch. Ruth
Hello Ruth, I have no connection to the Looney's but found this recently in VA Colonial Militia by Crozier: Peter Looney, dec'd, Sergt. in Capt. Smith's Co. of Rangers last war, till he was taken prisoner by French and Indians in 1756. That he did not return from his captivity for near two years. Thanks for sharing the info about your family. It is very very interesting. And you are so fortunate to have a photo of Felix Hickman Bilbrey. The oldest photo we have is one dated 1911 taken of the Horner family in a group photo, standing next to their wooden shack of a house in Hilham, near Livingston, TN. My hubby's mother, Ida Eula Horner was about 13 years old. My hubby's grandparents Eugene and Molly Sullivan Horner are in the photo. Their house in Hilahm is about 5 miles from the cemetery where Eugene and Molly are buried. I've visited the cemetery and found their headstones. Very crude with markings which are barely legible. Seemed like times were really rough for this family. I guess you know that Vanderbilt Medical School is still in operation and is located in Nashville, TN. I've driven past it many times. It has an excellent reputation of being a fine university. Thanks for writing. Dona Terry Houston
Yes, his name was Felix Hickman Bilbrey. He was born 10 Aug 1841 in Cookeville, Overton Co., TN. I have a picture of him that was taken when he was 20 years old in 1861, in his Private's Confederate (gray) uniform there in Overton Co., TN. Both of his daughters have his nice long nose and his long slender fingers. One of those daughters was Elnora Bilbrey that the family called Nora. The other was Jennie Lee Bilbrey, who was my grandmother. She was an accomplished pianist who had studied at the St. Louis School of Music. She was able to play anything you could hum or she could remember without any music to read. Binom Bilbrey was my grandmother's grandfather and the father of Felix Hickman Bilbrey. Felix married Mary Ann Gulley and they moved to IL. He studied to be a Dr. and came down with TB. He had to quit his medical studies but he worked in a drug store to help support his family. Later, when he got over being so sick, he went back to study medicine in TN. My father told me he got his medical degree from Vanderbuilt Medical School. My father had his medical degree for a long time but it got lost in a move we made. Ruth Kinney Townsley
Do you know whether your Bilbrey ancestor was in the Civil War? Thank you so much for your information on the Bilbrey Stables. I am wondering if there is anyone there who could check and see who the original owners were? Thanks, Ruth Kinney Townsley, A great, great granddaughter of Binom Bilbrey.
The Bilbrey Stables are very old. They are probably 30-35 years old. I am not sure who owns them. I checked the phone book, but could not find a listing for the stables. At this point I am not sure they are even open for business any more. I haven't been there in many years. Gary D. I know very few of those road names in Overton County today. I left there in 1970 and its far from being the same place now. I just called the roads what the local residents used for a name. Unfortunately, those names were not used in the mapping that occurred in the 1980's. Gary D. Norris > From: "Billy D. Perhaps someone can help me on this Bilbrey matter. I found this entry in the 1860 Census of Overton Co TN: 1860 census of Overton Co TN, 11th District, Monroe, 1143-1143, June 14, 1860 Nathaniel Hutson ..... age 50 NC farm laborer Hannah Hutson ....... age 46 TN housekeeper cannot read/write James Hutson .......... age 22 TN farm laborer John Hutson ........... age 19 TN farm laborer Thomas Hutson ....... age 17 TN laborer Elizabeth Hutson ..... age 15 TN in school Malvina Hutson........ age 9 TN in school Elizabeth Bilbrey.... age 68 NC cannot read/write I am guessing that this Elizabeth Bilbrey, born abt 1792 in NC, is the mother of Hannah, born abt 1814 in TN. Can anyone identify Elizabeth BILBREY in the 1860 census? Does this Elizabeth Bilbrey fit into the family you are researching? Note that this family (without Elizabeth Bilbrey) is found in the 1870 Census of Overton Co TN; however the spelling of the surname Hutson in 1870 was changed to "Hudson". My husband is the great-grandson of Elizabeth Hutson, age 15, in the above census entry. I look forward to hearing from anyone who may shed some light on the identify of this Elizabeth (nee unk) BILBREY, born abt 1792 in NC. Thank you so much. Gary, Microsoft Streets and Trips is often helpful to find obscure road names. I put in Carr Shack Road in and it came up with Carr Smack Road, Livingston, Tennessee so I'm passing on the info. (No hint as to the Shack/Smack difference.) Carr Smack Road runs for 1.5 miles parallel to Hwy 111. Windle Road changes into Carr Smack Road when it crosses Hwy 85 and remains Carr Smack Road until it intersects Upper Millham Road. This may not be new information for you but I thought I'd pass it on. Also, Streets and Trips lists the location of 12 Carr Cemeteries in Tennessee and several Copeland Cemeteries. Carr and Copeland both with several sites near Livingston. I believe that Thomas and John were probably brothers or at least closely related. In the 1850 census a granddaughter of John Carr was staying at the home of Thomas Carr. The girl was Minerva Pritchett daughter of Mary Ann "Polly" Carr and Thomas Pritchett Billy D. Carr
