    3. Gary, is there any way you could create a hyperlink to the index of the 25th Infantry book? We did that for the John Alexander book we are selling to benefit Cumberland Co. Library. We put it on the library web page and people could see if they needed the book or not. Thanks! 3. The 25th Tennessee Infantry existed in the yeas 1861 - 1865. A. L. Hawkins was captured and spent time in Elmira Prison in New York State. He was swapped in a prisoner exchange on February 25, 1865. That meant he was in a terrible physical condition at that point. The very sick ones were the only Confederate soldiers that General U.S. Grant would allow to be swapped at that date in the war. Most had chronic dysentery and had to spend the last two months of the war healing in mountain waters of North Carolina. Gary D. 3. Dale, I have 143 men listed in Company K. Only two of them made it to the final day at Appomattox. I have Captain Ford's signature as well as Alex Welch's. Alex left the unit because he was too young. Ford was chosen as the original captain of Company K, but was "turned-out" in the reorganization of the unit in May 1862. Gary D. 3. I only have a W. Burton with Company D of the 25th. There was a Jackson Burton with the 28th Infantry. You might want to check that regiment for him. The unit was from the Upper Cumberland area. I do not see an Andrew Jackson Burton with any other Tennessee Confederate unit during the war. Gary D. 3. Dale. Thanks for the information. I have heard some stories, too. One is about John Calvin Brown during the Civil War. My Aunt Flossie Ashburn Atkins (who just passed away June 18, 2003) told me #1 There were Union soldiers on one side of the creek and Confederate Soldiers on the other side. It was night and they caught John Calvin and were going to hang him until they saw Polly (John's wife) go toward the Confederate Camp with a light (going for help)..they let him go because they didn't want a fight.. My Cousin Bobby Neely told me the same story this year, too.Bobby is the son of Artie Ashburn the daughter of Robert Balaam Neely and Elvira Brown, daughter of John Calvin and Polly Phillips Brown. #2 This was told to Bobby by his Grandmother Elvira Neely, daughter of John Calvin Brown. There were Union soldiers on one side of the creek and Confederates on the other. It was night and the Union soldiers caught John and were going to hang him because they said he had helped the Rebs. The Union soldiers hung him but when they left Elvira and her two sisters cut him down. They said John lived (which we knew) but was never "right" after that.. One other note. I was surprised to find out recently My Great Grandfather James Anderson Ashburn was a Union Soldier..I have to say I was disappointed. 3. I was asking a question about Sarah Englantine Flowers, and got this message in response by mistake.... Patricia Sells Donna, I have a W. J. Pitts who was a private in Company E of the 28th Tennessee Consolidated Infantry in the Confederate Army. I did not find him in any local Union units. Who were Malinda's parents. Perhaps that might give someone a lead to know that information. Gary D. Norris > Trying to find Joel Pitts. Born abt. 1843 in Overton Co. TN. H later married > Malinda J.
