Some left after the Civil War to settle in the Civil War and avoid Union authorities in Tennessee. These were the Confederates. Others left around 1889 to get the free land in the Oklahoma Territory land rush. A family can only divide its land so many generations before it runs out and the next generation has to leave. That is the case with most Tennesseans leaving for the promise lands. Gary D. I would think that maybe all WINNINGHAMS in Row 25 would probably be relatives. I think I saw in Overton...Pickett or Fentress a DAVID WINNINGHAM. So I am wondering if all these people from Overton Co. TN just decided to try to make their fortunes as farmers, and move to OK. Dear Milly... Why the Winninghams chose Oklahoma, I'm really not sure. I will ask my GrAunt. I also do not know if they all left together or around the same time, but she will love answering these questions! I can only pick out a couple of Winninghams listed that are familiar to me from your Greer Co. Cemetery list. I find something extremely interesting though.... you show 2 Sarahs who's deaths were appx. 10 years apart! I believe people have been putting the two together as one. The reason the dates and names have been off! The one Sarah (1858-1943) I never knew about... So this one is the one Married to DG?? The other Sarah (1874-1953) is the one that I have always had listed in my pedigree charts. You also said you did neighbors of Millard J Winningham, and listed Jesse Sells... Jesse was Millards Son-In-Law, and my Great Grandfather. I am also trying to do searches on his side of the family... Thankyou ever so much for any information. It's been so frustrating!! In the 25th Tennessee Infantry book the Orsborns are as follows: Franklin, Henry, William H. I also have a G. W. Osborn. I have George and John Webb. Here is my long list of Copelands: Andrew C., Andrew Jackson, Barnabas B., Frederick F. M., George A., George W., James Monroe, James Richardson, James S., Jefferson, John S., Joseph A., Joseph J., Josiah S., Mitchell, Phillip F., Silas, Solomon Addison, Solomon Francis, and Thomas B. The men in the 25th Infantry were primarily from the present area of Jackson, Overton, White, Putnam, Clay, Pickett, and Fentress Counties. The oldest soldier was approximately 81 while the youngest was only 12! There are 1,486 men that served in the unit during the Civil War. I have recorded the military record of each man from the files in Nashville and Washington, D. C. These are the military records that many genealogists buy for about $10 per soldier. I have also tried to show census information to confirm their place of residence and their immediate families before and after the war. I have the signatures of many of these men. These signatures were taken from their military records. Whenever, possible I have included pictures of the men or their tombstones. Some of the men have copies of their actual newspaper obituaries included. All of this is packed into a 568 page book that is fully indexed. Statistics are given for each company and the entire regiment. Letters to loved ones are included as well as a timeline for the regiment showing exactly where they were located during the war. Notations of medals for bravery are noted as well as pension papers. Find out the names of the 22 men who actually finished the war with the regiment at Appomattox, Virginia. Gary D.
