    3. Gary, Thanks for the information. I'm going to be ordering the book later this week. I am so grateful to you for writing these books. I really appreciate all the help that you so generously give to others on this list. I have enjoyed your comments regarding the westward movement from Overton County to Oklahoma. Many of my relatives moved from Overton, Jackson and Clay counties to Collin County, Texas starting about 1875. Many of the Stones, Burrus, Gearhart, Roberts, Kirkpatricks and Butlers moved there. My PETERMAN grandparents moved from Celina, Clay County, TN to Celina, Collin County, TX in about 1900, but many of their relatives were already living there by then. W. C. Burrus and John Mulkey named the town of Celina, TX after their hometown of Celina, TN. Do you have any plans for writing about the Tennessee 4th Cavalry (Murray's), Company D? I believe that Company D was made up of men from Overton County. Two of my great grandfathers served in Co. D (Cleon E. Dale and Riley Peterman) and they each had a brother-in-law who served in the same company. Timothy Coe Burrus was the brother-in-law of Cleon E. Dale and William Stone was the brother-in-law of Riley Peterman. I would love to buy a book about the 4th and see a listing of the men who made up Company D. Thanks again, Betty ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gary Norris" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, November 18, 2003 7:37 AM Subject: Re: [TNOVERTO] Hamilton and Shaw's Cavalry Battalion Book > Betty, > > I have William Henry Peterman and W. 3. Jettie, I found Alvin Henley and his family buried at Poplar Springs. He was born in 1867 and died in 1921. Does that help any? There is a Weeks cemetery, but there is only one grave in it marked as Weeks. It had an 1894 - 1971 date so I don't think it would help. Polly Ann Weeks was born in July 1859 and died in 1908. The Tennessee Death Index mentioned her death, but there was not a cemetery listed. There are no Wix left in the county. Putnam County (1854), Clay County (1870), and Pickett County (1879) were all created from Overton County. Your families may have settled in those areas and are not now a part of Overton. You might try searching them. Below is a listing of my books. Gary D. Norris Upper Cumberland Civil War Books & Prints 25TH TENNESSEE INFANTRY REGIMENT - The book has 1,486 men from Overton, White, Putnam, Jackson, Clay, Pickett, and Fentress Counties. There are many pictures along with their military records, company and regimental statistics, pension records, census records, and newspaper clippings. The book is over 550 pages with an index and timeline. Follow this unit from Mill Springs to Appomattox. The price is $50.00. CHAMP FERGUSON's INDEPENDENT SCOUTS The book lists his men and gives brief biographies. Pictures of some of the men or their tombstones are included. Champ's victims are pictured as well as his foes. Lots of photos include the site of Champ's hanging as well as his land in Clinton County. Cost $30.00. TINKER DAVE BEATY'S INDEPENDENT SCOUTS The book lists each member of the scouts and tries to give a personality sketch of the individual soldier. Several members have individual pictures or tombstone pictures included. Cost $30.00. HAMILTON AND SHAW'S CAVALRY BATTALION  This Confederate unit operated mainly in the Jackson, Clay, and Overton Counties of Tennessee. Made of only 200 men, this unit was supposed to cover an area of several hundred square miles. Champ Ferguson scouted for them. When Major Hamilton was killed while captive at Lexington, Kentucky, Ferguson went on a rampage at Saltville, Virginia to avenge his friend. The price is $30.00. 3. Dale, I've been working vigorously on Roysden Roberson...still much to do. Yes, he's buried in France Cemetery, as is his wife Alsy(many spellings) and several of his children. I have list of children, 3 wives, him in several censuses, his will, ...what I haven't confirmed is his father (though I have hints, no proof), mother's maiden name, etc. I am descended from his son Haywood Clifton Roberson who left Tennessee after his marriage in Overton Co to Amy Sehon in 1900, came to Colorado and ran a livery stable for the mines in Altman, Colo and Ouray, Colo, and then came to Goldfield, Nevada in 1907 where he was elected County Clerk and Treasurer until his death in 1929. If you'd like any of what I have, I'd be glad to send you details...just let me know. And if anyone has more info, I'd love it, hints and all. The photo you mentioned would be great. We were in Livingston/Monterey/Sparta, etc. this summer and visited his grave...we ran out of time too soon. 3. Gary, Is there any HENLEY names in any of your books?? I know my line came through Tennessee and Missouri, into Arkansas, and onward, most of them had already left TN before the Civil War. I am also researching Weeks/Wix who were in Overton County in the early 1800s, but moved on before the war, also. Jettie Henley Parrish

    3. Gary... Is there a marriage book of Fentress or Overton?? Looking for the marriage of Belle Missouri Winningham to a James Smith. I believe the marriage would have taken place between 1885-1890. The 1890 US Census is no help for it was destroyed in a fire. Thankyou for the listing of books... I have picked a few that I will be purchasing in the near future. 3. A good reference for researching Cherokee ancestry is http://www.tngenweb.org/cherokee_by_blood/ This tells you how to research the Guion Miller and Dawes rolls. A suggestion, after you have determined if, and which roll, your ancestor is on, check with LDS Family History library...they can obtain the microfilm and you can print them out...it is a lot faster and cheaper than going thru the National Archives. The Guion Miller rolls are applications taken in 1906 or '07. I found that my great grandfather on my grandmother's side had applied for these benefits [denied, due to lack of information], but his application gave me 4 generations of information, and confirmed some family "legends." 2. Gary Norris
    3. When the first white settlers came to the Upper Cumberland, many of them got 640 acres for service in the Revolutionary War. Just suppose each of the settlers had 5 children and a wife. Within the second generation the land was divided into 6 farms of 120 acres by around 1825. By 1850 the farms were divided into 36 farms of 20 acres each. Well, you get the idea. The deeds show how the farms got smaller and smaller over time. Also, the better ground was farmed first and the land just gave up all of its nutrients since there were no fertilizers then. Well, the children just felt a pressure to leave the land and travel to the free land out west. The train made the travel much easier from the 1890's onward. You could catch a train at Algood and be in Oklahoma the next day. Gary D. 2. Have been reading with interest the conversation of the people from Overton who moved to Oklahoma and why. Does anyone know of the Daniel family who also migrated to Oklahoma? I don't know where exactly they lived except in the 1890 census Jackson Daniel is listed in Logan and James M in Cleveland. Washington and Lewis/Louis were also there but I don't know where they lived as they came back to Tipton County, Tennessee, they were born in Overton County. Appreciate any information about any of the above or a specific location people first went to. Jeanetta Gardner

    3. Gary It might be added that the a lot of the area around Overton, Jackson, Putnam, etc was probably devastated by the Union armies and their sympathizers. It was probably difficult to sustain a living. I can remember one my elementary school teachers in Cookeville [who incidently also taught my mother] relating stories of the hardships resulting from "Mr Lincoln's War". This was in the mid-1940's. I am sure that she had heard the stories from those who experienced them and stayed. I have researched other relatives of my ancestors who went first to Arkansas, then to Oklahoma, as you said probably of the opportunities there. Dave Masters
