Does anyone here recognize this William COLE? I found the family on the 1880 census for Obion Co., Dist. 108, Page 5, Dwelling #42: Descendants of William Cole 1 Cole, William b: Abt. 1840 in Tennessee d: Aft. 1880 .. +"Cole", Mary Jane b: Abt. 1840 in Tennessee d: Aft. 1880 ......... 2 Cole, Robert B. b: Abt. 1868 in Tennessee d: Aft. 1880 ......... 2 Cole, Quella b: Abt. 1870 in Kentucky d: Aft. 1880 ......... 2 Cole, Mady b: Abt. 1870 in Tennessee d: Aft. 1880 ......... 2 Cole, Richard D. b: Abt. 1875 in Tennessee d: Aft. 1880 William is the right age to be Wm. M. COLE, son of Marvel COLE and Lucinda GAMMILL, whom I have not been able to find after 1860. I had discounted the possibility of a match, because this census states that both of his parents were born in NC while the 1850 census states that Marvel was born in TN & Lucinda in AL. BUT, it just hit me that "Mady" could be a nickname for "Madison", and our elusive Wm. M. COLE had an uncle named James Madison COLE -- who went by Madison. [James Madison COLE also had a son named William, but he is accounted for.] Although I could not find a match for Wm. M. COLE on the 1870 census for Obion Co., this William obviously lived across the line in KY when Quella was born -- so if the two are really the same man that would certainly explain why Wm. M. has been "missing" And our COLEs did have a maddening habit of moving back and forth across the state line. I don't want to jump to any conclusions about this, so if any of the other COLE lines in Obion Co. can claim this family I'd be ever-so-grateful to have this piece of the puzzle put in its proper place.
