    1. [TNOBION] D.W. Wicker - Immortal Thirteen

    3. Hello Everyone....Happy New Year to All D.W. Wicker, one of the Immortal Thirteen and the Obion Avalanche, Co H, Ninth Tn Infantry, was David Walker Wicker, youngest son of John and Naomi (Walker) Wicker and brother of my great--great grandfather James M. Wicker. David "D.W." contracted smallpox at the end of the war while traveling home to Obion Co, TN onboard the enemy's ship, the Union Line & Ohio Bell on the Mississippi River, and was rendered blind. Although John Cavanaugh's Historical Sketch of Obion Avalanche, published in 1922, from his rememberances, places David's "D.W." death about 1891, he actually died in 1901 and is buried in Sardis Cemetery - Obion Co. Mr. Cavanaugh's sketch certainly is a very vivid individual account and valuable tool for research.....but a certain amount of caution needs to be attached to it. There is a David B. Wicker/Whicker who married Sarah Russell in 1869 in Fulton Co, KY and shown on the 1870 Obion Co, Tn Census with a dau, Pleasant, born 1870......I have not been able to determine whether this is, in fact, the same David W. Wicker. Records thus far have shown David was never married and that he was, in fact, divorced. If divorce info exists....I would surely appreciate a "look-see". Any Wicker or Russell association which could help set the record straight on this part of my family line would be greatly appreciate. Dora
