Posted on: Obion Co. Tn Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tn/Obion/1423 Surname: McINTOSH, RUNNELS, THOMPSON ------------------------- Need information on Jesse (J.E.) McINTOSH, b. 1820 in KY, appears on the 1850 Fulton County, KY census as age 29, has no wife, but three children: John B., b. TN, age 7, Mary, b. KY, age 4, and Laura, b. KY, age 1. I have found a marriage license for him to a Melissa Jane THOMPSON on 9/22/1841 in Obion County, TN. I would assume that she died after the birth of their last child. Jesse then turns up on the 1860 Obion County, TN census with a new wife "M," age 26, b. TN, son J.B., age 17, b. TN, daughter "J," age 5, b. TN, and another daughter "M.A.," age 3, b. TN. His two daughters Mary and Laura do not appear with this family. Yet, surprisingly enough he has three other children with the surname of RUNNELS living with him, Polly, age 14, and two boys "J" and "N" both 13. WHO ARE THESE KIDS? I checked for a THOMPSON family that might have had the two girls (reasoning that perhaps he moved back to Obion County in the first place so the maternal grandparents could help raise the young children). However, I only find one THOMPSON family, William, age 33, with a 15 year old Mary M. in his household. This is not definitive proof that she is Jesse's daugher Mary, however. Then on the 1870 Dyer County, TN census Jesse appears again as age 50, with another wife, Lucy, age 33, b. TN, children Josephine, age 16, b. TN, Maggie, age 14, b. TN, W--- (female), age 11, b. TN, May, age 3, b. TN, and Nancy, age 1, b. TN. I have found in the Dyer County, TN marriages: Laura McINTOSH to W. S. TURNER, 4/8/1867, Maggie A. McINTOSH to J. W. CRIBBS, 11/16/1875, and then Josephine McINTOSH to J. W. CRIBBS, 10/9/1878 (probably her brother-in-law). I noted on the marriage record for Jesse McINTOSH to Melissa Jane THOMPSON that John THOMPSON stood as Surety and that Arthur THOMPSON married them. Then on Jesse's marriage to Mary Malonia MALONEY/Mary NOLAN DAVIS (two marriages recorded on the same day to Jesse McIntosh - two different names) on 10/16/1850 John THOMPSON is again standing as Surety. I did find a Arther (Arthur) P. THOMPSON on the 1840 Obion County, TN census with a daughter between the ages of 15-20, this could be Melissa Jane, but no confirmation that it is and that he was her father. I did not find Arthur in any other Obion County census after this date although he married Jesse and Melissa in 1841 - perhaps he died.Sorry to be so long winded but Jesse is my brick wall on my McINTOSH side and I have just discovered the THOMPSON connection. Any help will certainly be appreciated. Thanks! :-) Lyn
>From what I have found from looking at the newspapers on microfilm, there are a few starting late 1890's, and very sketchy at best, but a more complete run starts September 1929. It's just a hit & miss until then. Early papers just didn't survive, and make it to microfilm.. Vol 1. of the Obion County History Book is out of print. The last that I knew, the historical society still had copies of volume 2. This and other publications available from them are listed at http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnobion/library/hsociety.htm These are wonderful books, but they are not indexed ... I've had copies for a good while and only found my Jones until a few months ago ... it was hidden deep in a family by the name of "Word" that I never have suspected had any connection to us. I'm saying this to say that it's easy to do look-ups in these books if the family submitted a sketch ... but it's hard to find a "hidden" family ... you just have to luck across them. Also, the volumes contain many errors, both typo and data. This has been proven in my research of original records and by those of you who sent proof of errors. Nevertheless, they are valuable tools of research. I guess I'm saying, be cautious with any writings and make every effort to check the dates and names with official records ... and sometimes, they are wrong, too. (as anyone who has worked in census records knows. Can someone tell me if there are Obion County Newspapers from 1863 and where they would be. Thanks
Sue, I was told for the cemeteries of Cobb's Chapel & Antioch Baptist Cemeteries that there are no early plot records. Families just went and staked out what plots they wanted, and no records ever changed hands to know who had what except by word of mouth. Do not know if this applies to the cemetery you are asking about. Anyone willing to do look-up's in these books for other folks? I am looking for any informtion on a Jesse McINTOSH, b. 1820, KY, who married Melissa J. THOMPSON of Obion County, TN on 9/17/1841, ceremony by Arthur THOMPSON (kin to her?) also shown marrying Mary MALONEY/Mary NOLAN DAVIS in Obion County, TN on 10/16/1850. Surety on both marriages was John THOMPSON. Jesse is shown on the 1850 Fulton County, KY census with no wife but with three children, John B., age 7, b. TN, Mary, age 4, b. KY, and Laura, age 1, b. KY. Melissa has obviously died. So, I assume that he then takes the children back to Tennessee to stay with their maternal grandparents, the THOMPSON's as he turns up in the 1860 Obion County, TN census married to "M" - I'm thinking here Mary, but only John is listed as living with them along with two other children a "J", age 5, and a "M.A." age 3. Obviously Mary and Laura are still with their grandparents as I find at least Laura later on as marrying in Dyer County, TN which is where the family finally ended up. Any help on these THOMPSON and McINTOSH lines would be greatly appreciated. They are my brick wall. That is pretty much the case on cemetrey plot ownership here in Obion Co on older cemeteries. The only ownership records I've found are for the big city cemetery here in Union City. Their records only indicate the buyer. Dennis in Union City©

Who would have the cemetery plot ownership records? And are there records of all of the burials, and who would have them? I think this information would be useful for all of the cemeteries. But I'm interested in one particular cemetery. We have relatives buried in the Mason Hall cemetery. There are no markers for them in the cemetery. Their names are James William (Tobe) and Nancy A. (Hunt) Wilson. James (Tobe) Wilson died in 1935. Nancy (Hunt) Wilson died before that (but was living in 1920). Does anyone here recognize this William COLE? I found the family on the 1880 census for Obion Co., Dist. 108, Page 5, Dwelling #42: Descendants of William Cole 1 Cole, William b: Abt. 1840 in Tennessee d: Aft. 1880 .. +"Cole", Mary Jane b: Abt. 1840 in Tennessee d: Aft. 1880 ......... 2 Cole, Robert B. b: Abt. 1868 in Tennessee d: Aft. 1880 ......... 2 Cole, Quella b: Abt. 1870 in Kentucky d: Aft. 1880 ......... 2 Cole, Mady b: Abt. 1870 in Tennessee d: Aft. 1880 ......... 2 Cole, Richard D. b: Abt. 1875 in Tennessee d: Aft. 1880 William is the right age to be Wm. M. COLE, son of Marvel COLE and Lucinda GAMMILL, whom I have not been able to find after 1860. I had discounted the possibility of a match, because this census states that both of his parents were born in NC while the 1850 census states that Marvel was born in TN & Lucinda in AL. BUT, it just hit me that "Mady" could be a nickname for "Madison", and our elusive Wm. M. COLE had an uncle named James Madison COLE -- who went by Madison. [James Madison COLE also had a son named William, but he is accounted for.] Although I could not find a match for Wm. M. COLE on the 1870 census for Obion Co., this William obviously lived across the line in KY when Quella was born -- so if the two are really the same man that would certainly explain why Wm. M. has been "missing" And our COLEs did have a maddening habit of moving back and forth across the state line. I don't want to jump to any conclusions about this, so if any of the other COLE lines in Obion Co. can claim this family I'd be ever-so-grateful to have this piece of the puzzle put in its proper place.
