The few Barefoot family members I know have roots in GA/SC and know that they have Indian blood (some of them look like they could step into a chief's headdress with no problem!). Some of these particular Barefoot family members had changed their name to Short. Whether Cherokee or not, I don't know. You might want to start with the Indian rolls. Just an idea... Posted on: Obion Co. Tn Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tn/Obion/1478 Surname: Hubbs, Palmer, Evans, Withers ------------------------- I list the following information on John B. Palmer who married Elizabeth Caroline Hubbs determined from my research. I believe John B. Palmer was a brother of my great grandfather, James Lowry Palmer who married Mary Jane Evans 1842 in Obion Co., TN. James Lowry Palmer was the son of Jacob Palmer and Isabella ("Ebby") Withers, married 1813 Lincoln Co., NC. Jacob and Ebby were in Obion Co., TN by 1840, then moved to Washington Co., MO before 1850. Do you know anymore about the family of John B. Palmer and Elizabeth Caroline Hubbs? Thank you, Carolyn Luton Geittmann John B. Palmer Born ca 1822, Buncombe or Macon Co., NC Married 08 Feb. 1845 Obion Co., TN Elizabeth Caroline Hubbs Born ca 1825-27 TN or KY Daughter of Mark Hubbs and Delina Hayes. By 18 July 1860 John & family were living in Washington Co., MO, possibly moving there after the birth of their daughter, Mary A., who was born ca Feb. 1860 in TN according to the 1860 census of Washington Co., MO. But the 1870 census shows the later children as having been born in MO, so John may have moved to Washington Co., MO by 1855. He and Elizabeth C. were still living in Richwoods, Washington Co., MO on 05 June 1880, just 4 households away from their son, John. Children: 1. Sarah J. Palmer, b. ca 1846 TN 2. John E. Palmer, b. ca 1849 TN (A John Palmer m. Miss Elizabeth Renfro 17 Sept. 1872 in Washington Co., MO; a John E. Palmer of Richwoods, age 21, m. 12 June 1887 Annie Evans, age 18 with her father, Thomas Evans giving consent). 3. Robert A. Palmer, b ca 1855-57 MO; living with parents in 1880 4. Milton/Jacob Palmer, b ca 1858 MO, listed as Milton in 1860, listed as Jacob in 1880, living with his parents in 1880. Could his name have been Jacob Milton? If so, he was possibly named after whom I think was his grandfather, Jacob M. Palmer who was in Obion Co., TN in 1840. 5. Mary A. Palmer, b ca Feb. 1860 TN or MO (A Miss Mary Ann Palmer of Washington Co., MO m. Frederick Falls of Washington Co., MO 16 Mar. 1879 in Washington Co., MO) 6. Thomas J. Palmer, b. ca 1862 in MO, living with his parents in 1880 7. George Palmer, b ca 1867 in MO, still at home with parents in 1880

Old grandpa Thomas Hubbs is as elusive as his wife, in tracking them back from anywhere but Obion Co., TN. I do find Thomas HUBBS on an 1840 Benton Co, TN census record that has an 80-90 yr old male listed as living alone. I wonder if he died in Benton and was buried in Obion, or is actually buried in Benton, which is why we can't find his grave in Obion. ?? Jean

Posted on: Obion Co. Tn Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tn/Obion/1471 Surname: Mansfield, Carr, Sanders, Sullivan ------------------------- Seeking relatives of John and Nancy (CARR) MANSFIELD and Thomas and Anne (SANDERS) Carr. Tons of legal papers (deeds, wills, guardianships, etc.) link these families. John (b. VA) left Albemarle Co., VA for Wilson Co., TN circa 1807/09. Apparently, hes the John incorrectly listed on the IGI as "Morfield" who married Nancy, daughter of Thomas and Anne Carr (who also moved to WCT). Annes ancestry is perplexing, but Toms obit (Central Gazette, Charlottesville, VA; 6 July 1821) indicates hes the son of Gideon Carr, Sr.; indeed, hes mentioned in Gideons will. Tom was a sergeant in the Revolution, 9th Virginia Regiment (under Col. David Morgan). John fathered Grasty, Granville, Giley, Nancy, and ostensibly Garnett, my 3rd great-grandfather. All but Giley married in WCT; Granville remained there. Garnett and Lydia (SULLIVAN) Mansfield moved to LINCOLN Co. Grasty and Nancy (married Elias Edwards) ended up in WEAKLEY and OBION counties. BTW, what became of Giley?

There is a statue of this man on the Obion County courthouse lawn. He was a congressman from this district and there should be a lot of information available. That seat is now held by John Tanner, who has an office in Union City and of course also in D>C>
Do we have a statistician in our midst? Or perhaps someone good with census, odds and probability? Have any of you worked with the 1850 Obion Co TN Census slave schedule? I ordered in by mistake in lieu of the 1850 Free Census, but it has proven to be quite interesting. It gives the name of the slave owner, no name of the slave, but gives the age, sex, race. Some are b for black, some m for mulatto. Are any of you willing to give any odds on the mulatto's being the son or daughter of the owner ... I must add that some of the owners are female and some at the bottom of the pages are unreadable. I plan to eventually abstract all of this and add to our Obion Co pages and when I can determine correctly will add it to the 1850 Free Census list.
