SUBJ: OBION CO WW I VETS While rummaging through some old books in the Register of Deeds office, I found a register compiled in 1935 by Mrs. Rutledge Smith, the historian of the Tennessee Department of the American Legion Auxiliary in Nashville. The data was from the reports to the Secretary of War by Maj. Rutledge Smith, Chairman of National Council of Defense TN and Joseph Ballew, the Adjutant General of TN, and General Enoch Crowder, Provost Marhall General. So I assume it is a complete and accurate roster of all the Obion County World War I veterans, and the service members killed-in-action. It lists 1179 of them. Only the information listed below about each individual is provided: his complete name address service number place and date of induction branch of service place and date of birth organization and dates served overseas service rank type and date of discharge Other general information is provided on the local Selective Service Board and statistics on the registrants, inductees, and other interesting data such as: Ex-servicemembers not killed _ 959 Wounded __________________ 50 Killed _____________________ 45 Officers, US Army ___________ 34 Marines ____________________ 17 Sailors _____________________ 52 Officers, US Navy ____________ 2 Fraudulent, dishonorable, and deserters ___________________ 12 If anyone is interested in the individual veteran's data for genealogy purposes, the 155 page book is available at the Obion County Courthouse. For those who can't visit here, please write me at my address on the Obion County Genealogy web site. Posted on: Obion Co. Tn Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tn/Obion/1492 Surname: ------------------------- In response to your Obion County query, Henry Flowers, Sr. died in 1908. There is a biography of him in Goodspeed's History of Gibson County as well as Families and History of Gibson County, Tennessee to 1989 (which includes a photograph of he and Adelia). The Families biography contains much of the information from Goodspeeds which other researchers have claimed contains an error. Henry's grandfather, Henry Flowers was born around 1776 in North Carolina rather than 1785 in Virginia. Hope this helps.
My gg-grandmother, Catherine Wilborn, was married twice in Obion County. First was to Joseph B. Meadows, on 11 May 1848. They had two children, Joseph Wilburn Meadows and Jonas Meadows. Joseph died before the 1850 census was taken. On 17 Nov 1852, Catherine married Green W. Parker. I am unaware of any children of this marriage. Presumably Mr. Parker died; in 1863 Catherine married for the third time in Trigg Co., KY. Are any of these familar to anyone? Many thanks and Happy Holidays from warm & dry SoCal. -- *Marsha L.
