    1. [TNObion] BROWNLOW & GREER
    2. Leland & Nancy Carter
    3. To all BROWNLOW researchers: Much incorrect information about my direct ancestor has been posted on the internet by well-meaning researchers. I need to provide the following correct documentation that is supported by various, legal documents. I have supported documentation on the following Brownlow genealogy. I welcome any comments or questions. Thank you for all your help, Leland Carter, Great-grandson Brownlow Descendant HUGH COOK BROWNLOW (my g-grandfather) was born February 28, 1845 in Giles County TN and died January 10, 1895 in Henderson County TX. He is buried in the Brownlow family plot at Leagueville Cemetery in Henderson County. His gravesite was originally marked with a homemade marker. I recently took this marker down and the grave is now marked with a Confederate tombstone. His parents were WILLIAM BROWNLOW & ELIZABETH COOK BROWNLOW. Hugh's middle name is from his mother's maiden name: ELIZABETH COOK. Hugh, also called "Cook" married JANE F. GREER (Jenny) abt 1873, probably in or near Obion County TN. Jane was the daughter of "MARTHA GREER" b. 1835. The name of Jane's father is unknown. Jane had a brother, William, he was 2 years older. HUGH COOK BROWNLOW & JANE had 4 children: NETTIE LORRAINE BROWNLOW born 1874 in TN, died September 10, 1947 Van Zandt County TX, buried in Corinth Cemetery in Grand Saline TX. She married three times, REEVES, KING, HAYNES. HENRY FRANKLIN BROWNLOW (my grandfather) born December 5, 1876 in Kenton, Obion County TN, died October 16, 1952 in Tyler, Smith County TX, buried in the Brownlow family plot at Leagueville Cemetery in Henderson County TN. He was married two times: ADDIE ROZELLA HERRING and NANCY JANE WILLIAMS. FRANCES (FANNIE) BROWNLOW born November 26, 1880 in TN, died September 03, 1917, TX. These dates are my weakest links, recorded in the Family Bible, she died during the national flu epidemic. Fannie married BEN WILLIAMS. They lived in Paris TX, burial sites are unknown. MATTIE COOK BROWNLOW born November 30, 1885 in TN, died December 07, 1971 in Henderson County TX. She is buried in the Brownlow family plot at Leagueville Cemetery in Henderson County. Mattied married ROBERT LEE PARKER. A premature son was born to Hugh & Jane, and died a few days later. This was between 1880-1885. Exact dates of birth/death are unknown. The above are the ONLY children born to Hugh & Jane Brownlow. Jane died between 1885 and 1890. Cause & date of death and place of burial is unknown. Would like to hear from anyone with information. I've recently learned that in 1885 there was a small pox epidemic in Obion & Gibson Counties and many people died with complications, but have no proof that Jane died of the pox. She may have died in childbirth. After Jane's death, Hugh and the 4 children left TN and moved to Henderson County TX, settled in the community known as Brownsboro. Hugh's mother-in-law, Martha Greer, came with Hugh. My grandfather told me that one morning Hugh went to town and bought a new suit. He went home, put the suit on, called Martha to the room. He told her to put the suit in the closet, that he would be wearing it "in a few days". He died suddenly within the week. My grandfather assisted in the funeral arrangements. There is no doubt as to where Hugh died, when he died, and where he is buried. Thank you for permitting me to "speak my piece".

    3. JANE F. GREER, MARTHA GREER, W.E. GREER, WILL ROB GREER, ALLENE GREER. 1840’S TN or KY Seeking information on the parents/family of JANE F. GREER. Also seeking to know where she is buried. My great-grandmother, JANE F. GREER, was born about 1845. I don’t know what state, but she was in Giles County TN about 1872 when she married HUGH COOK BROWNLOW, in or near Giles County TN. Her mother’s name was MARTHA. Her father (or other relative) may have been W.E. GREER, who witnessed a Brownlow family Last Will & Testament. The Will, dated April 03, 1882, OBION COUNTY TN, was witnessed by E.H. TAIDALE, W.E.GREER, THOMAS L. MOSLEY, and H.T.FULLERTON, MD. A younger relative was ALLENE GREER. We found a photo of an infant with “ALLENE GREER” written on back. No dates. Another younger relative was WILL ROB GREER. We found a photo made in LEWISBURG TN of a boy about a year old. Probably pre-1890. Family legend is that Jane died before 1890 . About 1890 Hugh Cook Brownlow migrated to TX. Jane’s mother, Martha, also came to Texas with Hugh and the 4 children. The children of JANE F. GREER and HUGH COOK BROWNLOW were: Nettie Lorraine Brownlow, Fanny Brownlow, Henry Frank Brownlow and Mattie Francis Brownlow. All born in TN before 1890. I have a lovely photo made of Jane about 1870-80's. She was a beautiful woman with mysterious eyes. I will share this photo if related. Thank you for taking time to read and respond if you have a link. Mr. Leland Carter PO Box 162 Fruitvale, TX 75127 Van Zandt CountyTexas

    3. I would like to welcome those of you new to this site and tell you there are some really great folks who are willing to help just for the asking. I, myself do Volunteer research at Andersonville Civil War Prison in Andersonville Georgia. There are Any research I do is absolutely at NO cost and I am willing to do what I can. There are 1200 prisoners on record from the state of Tennessee and almost 800 who died here, I thought I would send my offer. As Tennessee was one of the states that was torn apart and was truley brother against brother,,I feel the need to say I am not in anyway trying to focus on the horrors of Andersonville compared to any POW camp in the north ..( i.e.Elmira ) or any others and do not wish to stir up arguments on this site. My focus is dedicated to ALL of those held prisoner during this war , on both sides. I just happen to be near Andersonville so this is where I do my work. Here are my sources of research. There are 2 online databases to do lookups.....One by name...one by Company and Regiment. I also have a copy of the Dorence Atwater Death list which has the names and grave numbers of 12960 graves with only 460 marked as " UNKNOWN " This along with a CD I have which contains 34,000 names of the 45,000 who were imprisoned there which helps me find prisoner records because of misspellings of the names or alternate names. I visit the prison site every couple of weeks and have access to the onsite databases as well as the physical files. I would like to let you know of another service I offer which is to take photos of graves for a small fee. Please do not consider this spam as my research offer is FREE for the asking and will be posted on this county site only once. If there is anything I can do in helping your research at Andersonville, please just ask.
