    2. >From The Oak Ridger 12 Dec 2003 Ruby Carolyn Gray, a former Oak Ridge school teacher, Ralph L. Shanlever, 93, of Clinton, Monroe Stout Jr., 47, of Oak Ridge, Patricia Lee Day, 73, of Oak Ridge, Lillie Johnson, 58, of Oak Ridge, ========================================= Ruby Carolyn Gray, a former Oak Ridge school teacher, died Thursday, Dec. 11, 2003. Born in Tuscaloosa, Ala., she attended Stillman College, where she received a bachelor's degree in elementary education. She also earned a master's degree from the University of Indiana in Bloomington, Ind., and studied at the University of Tennessee working toward a specialist degree in education. According to her family, Mrs. Gray believed that educating children was an important and divine career path and she dedicated her life toward this end. Her family said, for over 36 years, she helped children see the wonder and beauty of learning, teaching both first and second grades in the Oak Ridge school system. During her teaching career, her family said she helped to make the school system an outstanding place to learn. Mrs. Gray served as president of the Oak Ridge Education Association, a representative to the National Education Association, and was a member of the school superintendent selection committee. Her family said she was also committed to the community in which her children lived. Mrs. Gray served on the Planned Parenthood Board, helped to organize the Oak Ridge Human Relations Advisory Board and the Negro Business and Professional Women's Club and served on the board for Girls Incorporated of Oak Ridge. She was an elder at First United Presbyterian Church and she also served as chairman of the Education Commission. She was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Xi Iota Omega Chapter. Mrs. Gray is survived by her devoted husband, Joseph; two sons, Stephen Gray of Smyrna, Ga., and Gregory Gray of Eugene, Ore.; a brother, L.C. Manley and wife, Bessie, of Oak Ridge; four nieces, Myra Drake and Cynthia Manley, both of Knoxville, Diane Walker and husband, Roosevelt, of Detroit, Mich., and Carolyn Crooms of Buffalo, N.Y.; and by three nephews, Tony Manley of Oak Ridge, Edgar Manley and wife, Kelley, of San Josie, Calif., and Wendall Manley and wife, Maryanna, of San Diego, Calif. Eva Washington and husband, Charles, and Brenda Lee, all of Oak Ridge, are considered special friends. Her family said she will also be remembered by many friends. Her family would like to thank Dr. Hall's nursing and office staff as well as all of those who were instrumental in Mrs. Gray's care. The funeral will be at 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 14, 2003, at First Presbyterian Church. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 15, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. The family requests that any memorials be in the form of contributions to First Presbyterian Church Organ Fund, 1051 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge, TN 37830. The family will receive friends from 5 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the church. Weatherford Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. Ralph L. Shanlever, 93, of Clinton, died Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2003, at Windwood Health and Rehab Center in Clinton. Mr. Shanlever was a lifelong resident of Anderson County. According to his family, he was a prominent farmer who was very active in the community. He served on the Anderson County Board of Education, draft board and agriculture board for many years. He was a member of Dutch Valley United Methodist Church and Dutch Valley Community Club for most of his life. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Rufus Shanlever, Samuel Shanlever and Edmond Shanlever; and by two sisters, Maxi Shanlever and Lassie Reeves. Mr. Shanlever is survived by his wife of 64 years, Dorothy Shanlever; three sons, Roy Shanlever and wife, Charlotte, of Birmingham, Ala., James Shanlever and wife, Sharon, of Scottsboro, Ala., and Raymond Shanlever and wife, Kay, of Knoxville; and by four grandsons, Jeff Shanlever and wife, Tricia, Charles Shanlever and wife, Alice, Richard Shanlever and Mike Shanlever. The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12, 2003, in the chapel of Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with the Rev. Brenda Poole and the Rev. David Hanes officiating. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, at Sunset Cemetery in Clinton. The family requests that any memorials be in the form of contributions to Dutch Valley United Methodist Church, 2055 Sulphur Springs Road, Clinton, TN 37716. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Monroe Stout Jr., 47, of Oak Ridge, died Thursday, Dec. 11, 2003, at his home. Mr. Stout had been a journeyman sheet metal mechanic at Bull Run Fabrication. He was preceded in death by his parents Monroe Stout Sr. and Margaret Siler Stout. Mr. Stout is survived by two sons, Jeremy Monroe Stout and Colton Stout, both of Oak Ridge; a stepdaughter, Rebecca Dorsey, of Alcoa; a brother, Sam Stout, of Oak Ridge; and by a sister, Margie Foil, of Syracuse, N.Y. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday, Dec. 15, 2003, at Mr. Stout's home, 123 W. Gettysburg Road in Oak Ridge. Weatherford Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. Patricia Lee Day, 73, of Oak Ridge, died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003, at her home, of congestive heart failure. Born July 28, 1930, in Galveston, Texas, she was the daughter of Eugene and Clara Hayden Jackson. Mrs. Day was a high school graduate and attended the University of Texas. She was a homemaker and an Episcopalian. Her family said her hobbies included jewelry making, gardening, stained glass and cooking. According to her family, Mrs. Day was very involved in her church's activities including Daughters of the King Junior Warden, Scout Mistress, youth work, Vestry, Kitchen Guild, a Sunday school teacher, and a memorial garden caretaker and she helped plan and create a memorial garden. She also did childcare at her home after raising five children of her own. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Michael Day; two brothers-in-law, Harry L. Day and Jim H. Day; and by a sister-in-law, Millie Jackson. Mrs. Day is survived by her husband, Jack R. Day; a son, Richard Day-Reynolds and wife, Lori, of McMinnville, Ore.; three daughters, Lois Day and life partner, Betsy Fairlamb, of Eugene, Ore., Paddy Day of Oak Ridge, and Katie Day of Springfield, Ore.; and by three grandchildren, Lennon Day-Reynolds and Robert Day-Reynolds, both of Portland, Ore., and Stephanie Day-Goodman of Eugene. She is also survived by a brother, Hedley Jackson, of Houston, Texas, and his sons, Alan Jackson and wife, Susan, and their children, Scott and Christian, and Steve Jackson and wife, Randa, and their children, Brian, Kyle and Emma. Her family said everyone she knew are considered special friends. The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Monday, Dec. 15, 2003, at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Craig Kallio and the Rev. Claire Keene officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church. The family requests that any memorials be in the form of contributions to Makindu Children's Center, Africa/St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 212 N. Tulane Ave., Oak Ridge, TN 37830, or Habitat for Humanity of Anderson County, 85 Kentucky Ave., Oak Ridge, TN 37830. A celebration of life will be from 6:30 to 11 p.m. Monday at her home. Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Lillie Johnson, 58, of Oak Ridge, died Thursday, Dec. 11, 2003, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
