    2. http://www.knoxnews.com/kns/family/article/0,1406,KNS_308_2489406,00.html Neat story, Julie.. I remember laundry in Fentress County when we had no electricity till 1958. My Aunt Effie Leffew had a big huge black pot outside(sure wish I had that now <G>) She boiled water in it. Then it was hauled to another galvinized tub. She also had a well where you had to drop the bucket and and draw the water from about 25 or 30 feet down. It was as cold as ice and so oooo good. Well, on wash day we kids took turns drawing the water as it was called. That was when I lived with Aunt Effie. After my mother died we lived in Fork Mountain. Daddy had come up north looking for work...Guess who had to provide for us, my stepmother, 6 yr. old brother and 2 yr. old sister.....ME age 11. There was no well but a shared pump for the neighborhood. After I went to the store..postoffice for a nickel script, if I was lucky I got a dime. Then I would work pumping water for people to wash clothes. After the was I'd scrub the outhouse with left over wash water...My how times have changed......Now, I just go to the basement and throw the laundry in the washer.....No more pumping or drawing water but these old arms sure ache like I still do <G> Milly WARD Piros List Rootsweb Administrator for Anderson Co Tn~Campbell Co Tn and Fentress Co Tn http://www.geocities.com/millyella/listofpages.html Genealogists live in the PAST Lane
