PROUD WIFE OF TENNESSEE ARMY NATIONAL GUARD SGT. CURRENTLY ON TRAIN UP FOR DEPLOYMENT FOR KOSOVO. Hi Terry, I have to make a correction to my earlier post.At the time that my grandfather and yours worked for the railroad, it was just Southern Railroad. It is now Norfolk Southern. The lines that ran through Lancing in the early days were the CNOTP-Cinncinati,New Orleans,Texas Pacific and the AGS-Alabama Great Southern. My grandfather worked on both.He started in 1918 and worked until the late 1920's, he was then laid off.He returned to work for them in 1942 and remained with them until he retired. He started out on the extra transportable crew. When he retired he was a moler and a tie tapper. As for my Uncle John, he started work in 1936, first carrying water due to his young age, and then on the extra transportable gang. When he died in 1968 he was a foreman for the railroad. He worked on The CNOTP line. If you need anything else just let me know.My uncle said that he seems to remember my grandfather talking about a man named Gunter. My grandfather died in 1987. Cathy
Cathy, Thanks for the update, your latest post cleared up some confusion. I had come across an earlier map (1890's) that showed the railroad as Cinncinatti New Orleans and Texas Pacific. I was unable to find out if it had changed names. You straightened that up for me. Thanks for the assistance.
