From The Knoxville News Sentinel 13 Apr 2004 BISHOP, MARY ELLEN BAKER age 90, WILSON, BEN HOOPER - age 87 of Lake City, \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ BISHOP, MARY ELLEN BAKER age 90, beloved wife, mother and friend, died Sunday April 11, 2004 at her home. She was born in Jackson, Tennessee in 1913. Mrs. Bishop earned a B.A. degree in 1934 in Latin and completed coursework for an M.A. at the University of Tennessee. She taught English and directed plays at Knoxville High School until she was married to the late Dr. Archer Wortman Bishop Sr. in 1938, and they had two children. They moved to Oliver Springs, then Norris and then to Clinton where they resided from 1947 to 1999, at which time they moved to Knoxville. She was an active member of numerous service and social organizations in both Clinton and Knoxville. These included the Memorial United Methodist Church, the PTA (holding offices including president), the Timely Topics Club, civic associations and bridge clubs. In Knoxville, she was a member of the Garden Club, the Wednesday Club, the Symphony Society, the Arts Council and the Ladies Golf Association of Cherokee Country Club, to name a few. Nationally, she was a member of Delta, Delta, Delta Alumnae Association, the American Association of University Women and the Smithsonian Institute. She also was a world traveler, an avid gardener, horse-woman, golfer and bridge player and crossword puzzle lover. She was a devoted and beloved wife of 65 years, mother, friend and the unsung hero who keeps family, community and country together. She is survived by: daughter, Dr. Ellen Kimmel of Santa Cruz, California; son and daughter in law, Dr. Archer W., Jr. and Sandi Bishop of Knoxville; 8 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, 3 nieces and a nephew. Following a private graveside service, the family will receive friends from 6-800p.m. Wednesday at the home of Dr. Bishop, 4734 Lyons View Drive. WILSON, BEN HOOPER - age 87 of Lake City, passed away Sunday, April 11, 2004 at the Lake City Health Care Center. He was born April 8, 1917 in Campbell County, TN, to the late William Johnson Wilson and Maggie Cooper Wilson. Mr. Wilson was a man of deep Christian faith, prayer, and a dedicated servant to our Lord. He was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in Lake City, serving for 60 years as deacon, church treasurer, and Sunday school teacher. He was also a member of the Coal Creek Masonic Lodge, and the Lion's club. He was the co-owner of Wilson Grocery in Lake City. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by: his first wife, Delcie Wilson; brothers Luther, Clyde, and Winfrey Wilson; and sister Ruby Foster. Survivors; wife, Ollie Wilson, Lake City; son, Joe Ben and wife Charline Wilson, Knoxville; step-daughter, Carol and husband Dr. Curtis Sexton, Lake City; step-son, Tommy Inman and wife Rebecca, Garland, TX; granddaughter, Lisa Wilson, Washington, D.C.; step-grandchildren, Melissa Sexton, Atlanta, GA; Shelley Collier, Knoxville; Wade Sexton, San Antonio, Texas; Jenny Martin, Lake City, TN; Ashley Sexton, Norris, TN; Peter Sexton, Lake City, TN; Temple Metzer, Garland, TX; Wade Inman, Garland, TX; Ingrid Inman, Garland, TX; 23 great-Grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Pallbearers: C.W. Boggs, Alex Foust, William Lee, Hugh D. Foster, Jr., L.C. Wilson, Peter Sexton. Honorary Pallbearers: Deacons and members of his Sunday School Class. Visitation 6 to 8 pm Tuesday, April 13, 2004 at the First Baptist Church. Lake City. Funeral service to follow at 8 pm with scripture by Rev. Melissa Sexton with Rev. Brian Courtney officiating. Interment 11 am Wednesday, April 14, 2004 at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Lake City, TN. Memorials may be made the Annie Armstrong offering, First Baptist Church, Lake City.
