Samuel Thomas Briggs, Jr., BRIGGS, SAMUEL THOMAS, JR., born May 25, 1943, went home to be with Jesus April 16, 2004 at the home of his loving friend, Shirley Sehee in Spring City, Tn after a short illness. He was born in Morgan County and lived in Morgan and Roane counties most of his life. He was a veteran of the USAF from 1960 through 1964 serving in the Vietnam Conflict. He was of the Baptist faith and attended Paradise Baptist Church in Rockwood, TN. He served for 30 years at Brushy Mountain Prison as a correctional officer. He was preceded in death by one daughter, April Lynn Briggs; Parents, Samuel Thomas Briggs, Sr. and Willadean Briggs; Brother-in-law, John H. Hembree; Sister-in-law, Norma Briggs. Survivors include his caregiver and friend, Shirley Sehee of Spring City, TN; Two daughters, Rhonda Denise (Ed) Greenwell of Cookeville, TN and Carman Ann (Kevin) Smith of Kingsport, TN Three grandchildren, Nathan Greenwell of Cookeville, Nichole and Payton Smith of Kingsport; Two brothers, Larry Briggs of Wartburg and Roger (Linda) Briggs of Chatsworth, GA; One Sister, Fayrene Hembree of Lancing; Three nieces, Leah Briggs of Wartburg, Angie (Dautel) Mears, Holly (Craig) Houston of Chatsworth, GA; Two nephews, Terry (Lea) Hembree of Harriman and Joel (Michelle) Hembree of Lancing; Five great-nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends Sunday, April 18, 2004 from 6-8 pm at Schubert Funeral Home in Wartburg. Funeral services will begin at 8 pm with Bro. Roger Briggs of Chatsworth, GA and Bro. John Owens Vespie of Lancing officiating. A graveside service with full military honors will be held on Monday, 12 noon in Forrestner Cemetery, Lancing. Community of Morgan County went to be with his Lord, Thursday, April 15th, 2004. He was a member of the Pilot Mtn. Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army. He had been an employee of Y-12 for the past 27 years. He was preceded in death by his father, Clyde Kries; grandparents, Levi and Jessie Kries and William and Rosetta Bowman. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Charlotte Kesterson Kries; two daughters: Rhonda and Husband, Dean Hutchison and Tessa and husband, Jackie Branstetter. Three grandchildren: Amanda and Aaron Hutchison, and Jake Branstetter, and an additional grandson to be born this summer. Also surviving, his mother, Sis Kries; two brothers: Eddie Kries of Huntsville and James Kries of Florida. One sister, Judy Kries of Wartburg. Three aunts, Dixie Redmon of Wartburg, Martha Wilhoite of Chattanooga, and Mary Phillips of Kingston. Several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. The family will receive friends Saturday, April 17th, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Schubert Funeral Home in Wartburg. Funeral services will be held Sunday, April 18th, 3:00 p.m. at Pilot Mtn.
