Kapral, 89, \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ \\\\\\ Frank R. Cullaty, 89, died Monday, April 19, 2004. He was a veteran engineer for the Atomic Energy Commission in Oak Ridge and one of Oak Ridge's early residents. Mr. Cullaty retired in 1974 after more than 34 years of government service. Prior to retirement, he was a program analyst for the AEC's Oak Ridge Operations in the production and uranium enrichment operations division. After beginning his government service in 1941 with the U.S. Engineering District in Rome, N.Y., Mr. Cullaty, who was a native of New York, N.Y., was transferred from the Rome Air Depot to the Pennsylvania Ordinance Works in Williamsport, Pa., with Lt. Col. Kenneth D. Nichols who was the project manager. He was then transferred with Lt. Col. Nichols to the Manhattan Project in Oak Ridge, in May 1943 when construction of Oak Ridge facilities was in its early stage. Initially he assisted in providing housing for project workers and later was assigned engineering responsibilities in development of the Y-12 Plant electromagnetic separation facilities for the enrichment of uranium. Mr. Cullaty earned his engineering degree from the College of the City of New York. Prior to joining the AEC in 1947, Mr. Cullaty worked for some two years on a special assignment in compiling data for the history of the Manhattan Engineer District project. Mr. Cullaty was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, a charter member of the Elks Lodge No. 1684, and the Knights of Columbus of Oak Ridge. His family said he enjoyed fishing, bowling, golf and cards. Upon his retirement from the government, he and his wife traveled extensively in all the states and abroad. Mr. Cullaty is survived by his wife of 60 years, Dorothy "Dottie" Cullaty; three daughters, Mary Ann Hamel and husband, Steve, of Oak Ridge, Kandy Hayden and husband, John, of Huntsville, Ala., and Margaret Howell and husband, Kenneth, of Yadkinville, N.C.; two sons, John Cullaty and wife, Lynn, of Johnson City and Robert Cullaty and wife, Sherrie, of Radford, Va.; eight grandchildren, Jennifer Carlsen, Kris Brown, Karen Hayden, Matthew Hayden, David Hayden, Brian Cullaty, Ashley Cullaty and Julia Howell; and by a great-grandchild, Grace Carlsen. A funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 21, 2004, at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Anderson Memorial Gardens on the Oliver Springs Highway in Clinton. The family requests any memorials be in the form of contributions to St. Mary's Catholic Church, 327 Vermont Ave., Oak Ridge, TN 37830. Betty Jo Duncan, 71, of the Dutch Valley community, died Saturday, April 17, 2004, at her residence. Born May 7, 1932, in Anderson County, she was the daughter of Hugh and Georgia McWane. Mrs. Duncan was a Methodist. Her family said she loved gardening and her pets. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Harding Duncan Sr.; a son, Thomas Allen Duncan; and by a sister, Jean Sharp. Mrs. Duncan is survived by her children, Mary Elizabeth Cook and husband, David, and George Duncan, all of Clinton, James Harding Duncan Jr. and wife, Cindy, and Benjamin Duncan and wife, Sue, all of McCreary County in Kentucky, Kathy Gail Cadd and husband, Gary, of Murray, Ky., Deborah Seiber and husband, Greg, of Lynchburg, Bill Duncan and Elaine Graham of Oak Ridge; eight grandchildren, Adam Cook, Adrienne Cook, Sarah Catherine Owens, Adam West, Aaren Cadd, Jordan Duncan, Shara Nichole Duncan and Kriston Seiber; and by a brother-in-law, Buddy Sharp, of LaFollette. The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 20, 2004, in the chapel of Hatmaker Funeral Home in Lake City with the Rev. Brenda Poole officiating. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 21, at Anderson Memorial Gardens on the Oliver Springs Highway in Clinton. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. John A. Kapral, 89, died Sunday, April 18, 2004, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Born Aug. 22, 1914, in Batizovce, Czechoslovkia, he was the son of Joannes "Jon" A. and Appoloni N. Jeszercsak "Pauline" Kapral. He immigrated to the United States with his parents in 1925 and settled in Westfield, Mass. He graduated from Westfield High School in 1933 with honors. Mr. Kapral first entered the military service on July 18, 1934, in the U.S. Army Signal Corps and served until July 17, 1937. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps on Aug. 30, 1937, and served continuously since that date. He graduated from officer candidate school on March 4, 1944, and served in commissioned status until Oct. 13, 1953, attaining the rank of captain. He was promoted to the grade of major, Air Force Reserve, on July 1, 1958. He was promoted to the grade of chief warrant officer, W4 effective Nov. 16, 1960. Mr. Kapral served overseas in the Caribbean Theater, Far East, South Pacific and the British Isles. He was presented the Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal (Japan), National Defense Service Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Award with Two Silver Oak Leaf Clusters and the Armed Forces Reserve Medal. After discharge from service in 1964, Mr. Kapral was employed by Federal Electric, Cape Canaveral, Fla., for five years. In 1970, he moved to Oak Ridge and was employed by Union Carbide at the Oak Ridge Y- 12 Plant in the Electrical Engineering Department and retired from there in 1980. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. According to his family, Mr. Kapral enjoyed playing pool at the Oak Ridge Senior Center, where he won several trophies in pool tournaments. He was also a member of the Swift Aircraft Association and was a private pilot owning three of the Swift Airplanes through the years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Kapral Gregor and Anna Kapral; two brothers, Frank Kapral and infant brother Kapral. Mr. Kapral is survived by his wife, Helen Kapral; his daughter, Janette Burke and husband, Ted, of Midvale, Utah; two grandchildren, Steve Burke and wife, Erica, of West Jordon, Utah, and Karen Penn and husband, Bryan, of Sandy, Utah; four great-grandchildren, Andrew Burke, Kimberly Burke, James Penn and Katherine Penn; two nieces, Florence Fizgerald and husband, James, of Westfield. Mass., and Pamela Doyle and husband, Dennis, Rye, N.H.; and by three grandnieces. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 22, 2004, at St. Mary's Catholic Church with the Rev. Michael Woods and the Rev. Dr. Stephen Damos officiating. A graveside service with full military rites will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 24, at St. Mary's Cemetery in Westfield, Mass., with the Rev.
