McCowan, 57, William Eben Orr, 60, formerly of Oak Ridge, Robert Jeffery Stover, 49, of LaPorte, Ind., Richard A. Shepherd of Coalfield \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ Lois Elaine Dennis, 88, died Sunday, Feb. 22, 2004, at Continuum Courtyards of Oak Ridge. Born Dec. 17, 1915, in Michigan, she was the daughter of William and Frida Kent. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Claude B. Dennis, and by a grandson, Michael C. Dennis. Mrs. Dennis is survived by her son, B.L. Dennis; two sisters, Memorie Jean Peterson of Mountain Home, Idaho, and Joan Thomas of Michigan; her brother, Clifford Kent of Montague, Mich.; three grandchildren, Lorie Dew of Knoxville, Lisa Henson of Clinton and Mark Dennis of Panama City, Fla.; and by several great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2004, at Woodhaven Memorial Gardens in Claxton. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, at Woodhaven Funeral Home in Claxton. Arthur DuBignon "A.D." Horton, 87, of Stuart, Fla., died Friday, Feb. 20, 2004, the home of his daughter, Kathleen, in Orange Park, Fla. Born Aug. 5, 1916, in Birmingham, Ala., he was the son of Edgar C. and Carrie Belle G. Horton. His father was the weatherman of Birmingham for over 50 years. His parents raised their five children in the weather bureau. Mr. Horton graduated from Birmingham Southern College with a bachelor's degree in chemistry. He was an active alumni for over 60 years. He was employed by Union Carbide in Oak Ridge for 35 years as an analytical chemist and gas chromatographer. He became a charter member of the United Church Chapel on the Hill in October 1943. He sang in he chapel choir until 1987. While in Oak Ridge he was also a member of the Oak Ridge Community Chorus and the Savoyards. Mr. Horton and his wife, Marianne, lived in Stuart since April 2002. His wife of 54 years, Ethel J. Horton; a son-in-law, Wm. Pat Arnold; and his brother and three sisters, also died earlier. In addition to his wife, Marianne, Mr. Horton is survived by two daughters, Carolyn Simpson and husband, Scott, and Kathleen Arnold; two stepdaughters, Judy Valentine and husband, Jim, and Nancy Miner and husband, Jack Williamson; five grandchildren, Daniel Moore and wife, Janey, William Moore and wife, Elizabeth, Patrick Arnold and wife, Darleen, John Arnold and Nicholas Arnold; and by six stepgrandchildren, Regina Simpson, Allen Simpson and wife, Sharon, Mike Valentine, Doug Valentine and wife, Melissa, Debbie Manis and husband, Dave, and Tim Miner. He is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren, Nicole Moore, Benjamin Moore, Emily Moore, Tara Leigh Simpson, Marissa Valentine, Mariah Valentine, Dawson Valentine, Charlotte Valentine, Samantha Manis and Ben Manis. Mr. Horton is buried at United Church Memorial Garden. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004, at United Church Chapel on the Hill with the Rev. Dr. Boyd Carter officiating. The family requests that any memorials be in the form of contributions to the music department at United Church Chapel on the Hill, 85 Kentucky Ave., Oak Ridge, TN 37830, or to a hospice of the donor's choice. Albert J. Mallett, 95, of Oak Ridge, died Monday, Feb. 23, 2004, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Born Feb. 4, 1909, in Matamoras, Pa., he was the son of William H. and Martha Decker Mallett. He received a bachelor's degree in chemistry in 1935 from Albright College in Reading, Pa., and a master's in education from Columbia University in New York, N.Y., in 1937. Mr. Mallett also completed courses in engineering at Lafayette College in Easton, Pa. In 1940, while employed as a chemistry lab supervisor at Hercules Powder Co., he was a consultant for Union Carbide on the S.A.M. project and in 1944 he came to Oak Ridge, where he was a technical supervisor over the Nuclear Division of the Oak Ridge Gaseous Diffusion Plant. Mr. Mallett was promoted to supervisor of Nuclear Safety and Engineering Division in 1947 and again to department head of that division in 1961. He held that position until his retirement in 1973. He was a consultant for the Nuclear Safety and Engineering Division at Union Carbide's nuclear power station in Portsmouth, Ohio, until the late 1970s. Mr. Mallett is survived by his wife of 58 years, Virginia L. Jones Mallett; two sons, John and Kenneth, both of Oak Ridge; a daughter-in-law, Debra Mallett, of Oak Ridge; three grandchildren, John Jr., Christopher and Lindsey; and by three great-grandchildren, Kylie Carroll, Timothy Mallett and Chloe Mallett. The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2004, at Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home. A private graveside service will be Thursday, Feb. 26. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Herbert Bryan "H.B." McCowan, 57, died Sunday, Feb. 22, 2004, at his home at the Clinch Riverhouse in Lake City. According to his family, he was a loving and devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather, dedicated friend, counselor, teacher, mentor and one-man support system. Born Sept. 11, 1946, in Corbin, Ky., he was reared in Oak Ridge. He was the son of Jean and Herbert B. McCowan Sr., both now deceased. His family said his artistic talent led him to a bachelor's degree in fine arts from East Tennessee State University as a springboard to a career and lifetime of drawing, painting, rendering, graphics work and computer graphics, as well as leading and administering programs as a vice-president at Science Applications International Corp. and other companies providing engineering and design services to the private sector and to the armed services, most recently serving as a vice-president for technical services at GEM Technologies. He served two active-duty U.S. Army tours in Europe and was a major in the U.S. Army Reserves. He also used his talent in designing, building furniture, craftsman woodwork and architectural design of homes and other structures. According to his family, Mr. McCowan was an animal lover and an avid music, wine and cigar aficionado. His family said he was also an outdoor grillemaster culinary chef, a writer and philosopher, and was widely acknowledged as a mentor and expert instructor to many of the area's most accomplished "catch & release" fly fisherman. He was founder of the Silent One Brethren, a charter member of the East Tennessee Masters Association and conducted fly fishing instruction at the River House, assisted by his wife, Brenda and son, Chase. Two brothers, J.B. McCowan and Ross McCowan, also died earlier. In addition to his wife and son, Mr. McCowan is survived by two daughters, Erin McCowan of Butler and Heather McCowan of Seattle, Wash.; three stepchildren, John Moore and wife, Beth, and Susanne Fields and husband, Matt, all of Knoxville, and Kevin Moore of Hollywood; and by three grandchildren, Spencer Moore, Ashton Moore and Jacob Fields. He is also survived by two sisters, Joyce Herrell and husband, Jim, and Janie McCowan Overly and husband, John; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews; a special friend, Corbin; and by a special brother, Dr. Bill Robinson. His family said many friends have benefited from his intellectual energy, intensity, zeal, optimism, friendship, patience, encouragement, generosity, wit and uniquely "turned" sense of humor. His family said they express deep appreciation and heartfelt thanks to Dr. Bill Robinson, other physicians and nursing staff at the Cancer Care Center at Fort Sanders Parkwest Medical Center in Knoxville for their care and dedication to Mr. McCowan and especially to his wife for her steadfast caring for her husband during his illness. "When it comes to wealth, H.B. is the richest man I have ever known. His life has meant so much to so many people, and so many of us will continue to cry and remember that wonderful smile of happiness and encouragement he gave to everyone," a friend said. A graveside memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2004, at Grandview Memorial Garden in Clinton. There will be a celebratory wake Thursday, Feb. 26, afternoon/evening at the home of Janie McCowan Overly and husband, John. A final memorial service with a scattering of ashes will be held at a later date on Clinch River by the family and members of East Tennessee Masters Association. The family requests that any memorials be in the form of ontributions to the H.B. McCowan Memorial Fund, c/o, John Moore, 101 S. Main St., Suite 305C, Clinton, TN 37716. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton. William Eben Orr, 60, formerly of Oak Ridge, died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2004, in Bridgeport, Ala. Born May 5, 1943, he was the son of John and Myrtle Orr, both now deceased. He was a 1961 graduate of Oak Ridge High School. Mr. Orr is survived by two daughters and two grandchildren, Michelle Marla Orr of Athens and her children, Heather and Christopher, and Leah Gay Frost and husband, David, of Duluth, Ga.; and by one sister, Francis Mullins and husband, Buddy, of Bridgeport, Ala. The body was cremated. A family memorial will be held in the spring in Fontana, N.C. The ashes will be scattered on Orr Mountain. Tate Funeral Home in Jasper is in charge of arrangements. Robert Jeffery Stover, 49, of LaPorte, Ind., died Saturday, Feb. 21, 2004, at his home. Born June 22, 1954, in LaPorte, he was the son of Pauline Brooks Stover of LaPorte and Samuel Stover, now deceased. He had worked in the construction industry and was also an auto mechanic. He had spent the last few years staying home to take care of his mother. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a son, Robert Jeffery Stover Jr.; two brothers and a sister, James Stover, Jerry Stover and Martha Reed; and by his stepfather, Raymond Willoughby. In addition to his mother, Mr. Stover is survived by his daughter, Michelle Shelton of Oliver Springs; his son, Matthew Stover and wife, Melissa, of Troy, Ohio; and three grandchildren, Dillon Shelton, Emily Stover and Alex Stover. He is also survived by two sisters and a brother, Margaret Walls of Coalfield, and Doris Cox and John Stover, both of LaPorte; and by several nieces and nephews. A private family service was to be held Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2004, at Cutler Funeral Home in LaPorte.
