MONTEZE - age 81 of the Mossy Grove Community, MATTHEWS. STANLEY GRIFFITH, JR. - age 87 \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ AVERA, DR. JOHN WILLIAM, JR. - age 84, passed away Thursday February 19, 2004. Dr. John practiced internal medicine in the Knoxville and Oak Ridge area for 40 years. Family & friends remember his zest for life, joy of gardening, love of travel, music, and dancing. He was born in Smithville, NC and raised in Winston Salem, NC. He was graduated Wake Forest University, Bowman Gray Medical School, Residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan and a member of Alpha Omega Alpha honorary society. He served during World War II as Captain in the US Army Medical Corps in the Pacific. During his career, he was instrumental in bringing cardiac catheterization laboratories and kidney dialysis facilities to Knoxville. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Doris Smallman Avera; adoring daughter, Anne Matthews Avera both of Knoxville; son, John William Avera, III of Folly Beach, SC; grandchildren, Eve Gagne and husband, Jay of Connecticut, Sarah Avera of Rhode Island, John Avera of New Hampshire; great granddaughter, Sidney Gagne; his 2 younger sisters & 4 younger brothers. Memorials may be made to The Eaddy Diabetes Education & Research Endowment at UT Graduate School of Medicine, 1924 Alcoa Hwy., Knoxville, TN 37920 or Interfaith Health Clinic, 315 Gill Ave., Knoxville, TN 37917. COX, FLOYD H. - age 68, of Clinton, went home to be with his beloved wife, Shirley, Thursday, February 19, 2004 at St. Mary's Residential Hospice. He was a member of Farmers Grove Baptist Church. He worked at HT Hackney where he had many special friends. Preceded in death by parents, Henry & Etta Cox, wife Shirley Cox, sister, Melissa Cox & brother, Douglas Cox. Born May 5, 1935 in Anderson County. Survivors: sister, Elise & husband Beryl West of Powell; brothers, Carl & wife Bobbie Cox of Clinton, Paul & wife Katherine Cox of Clinton; sister-in-law, Evonne & husband Fletcher of Clinton; several nieces & nephews. The family will receive friends 4:00-6:00 PM, Saturday, February 21, 2004 at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home with funeral services following in the chapel with Rev. Ernest Wright officiating. The burial will be held 2:00 PM, Sunday at Taylors Chapel Cemetery. Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton in charge of all arrangements CUTHBERT, MARIE H. - age 81 of North Knoxville, died Wednesday February 18, 2004 at Mariner Health of Norris. She was retired from Union Carbide. She is preceded in death by her husband, Robert Cuthbert, Jr.; and daughter, Martha Cuthbert Knox; sister Flo Kirby and brother Bill Hawkins. She is survived by grandson and wife John and Cherri Knox of Clinton; and great grandson, Colby Knox, also of Clinton; several nieces. Memorial service will be 5:00 pm Saturday at Gentry-Griffey Chapel, Rev. Wayne Phillips. MONTEZE - age 81 of the Mossy Grove Community, passed away Friday, February 20th, 2004 in the Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. She was a member of Mossy Grove Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her, husband Rev. Lloyd Clayton Jones; and her son, James Larry Jones. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in- law: W.C. "Dub" and Trish Jones of Fairfield Glades, Tn., Lonnie and Kay Jones of Mossy Grove, Tn., Rev. Ronny and Karen Jones of Lenoir City, Tn., and Lloyd Jr. "Buster" Jones of Wartburg, Tn.; daughters: Paulette and Mike Schiwart of Beaumont, Tx, Cathy and Rick Long of Clinton, TN., and Regina and Ted Arnold of Hoover, Ala.; nineteen grandchildren, twenty great, grandchildren, and three, great, great grandchildren; two sisters, Ruby Pruett of Cleveland, TN., and Maizette Coleman of Chattanooga, TN. and brother, Herman Willborn of Auburn, Ala. The family will receive friends Saturday, February 21st from 6 to 9 p.m. at Schubert Funeral Home, Wartburg. Funeral services will be held Sunday, February 22nd at 2:00 p.m. at Mossy Grove Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Chuck Willborn and Rev. Dennis Jarnigan officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. MATTHEWS. STANLEY GRIFFITH, JR. - age 87 of Knoxville passed away Friday, February 20, 2004 at Oak Ridge Methodist Hospital. He was a member of Grace Baptist Church. He retired from Union Carbide (K-25). Preceded in death by his parents, Stanley M. Matthews, Sr. and Mary Lou Dyer Matthews; brother, Charles Matthews; sister, Louie Dean Ulrich; Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Dixie Bivens Matthews; son and daughter in-law, Raymond and Sandra Matthews; daughter, Bonnie Matthews; daughter and son in- law, Barbara and Leo Sage all of Knoxville; grandchildren, Charles Lee Matthews and Cindy Brown; great grandchildren, Cade and Reece Brown; brother, J.D. Matthews; and sister, Frances Doocey. Graveside services will be held on Sunday, February 22, 2004 at Woodhaven Memorial Gardens at 3:30 pm. Born on October 6, 1934 in Rock Creek, Kentucky to parents Jeff and Reba Stephens Anderson. Member of First Baptist Church, Clinton and a former longtime member of Glenwood Baptist Church, Oak Ridge where she sang in the choir. Mrs. Bartley was also an avid golfer and longtime member and officer of the South Hills Women's Golf Association. She was also a member of Oak Ridge Women's Club. Survivors include, husband, Robert E. Bartley, Clinton; son, Stewart Bartley and wife, Christina of Alexandria, VA; sisters, Thelma Wright, Invernes, FL, Wilma Neal and husband, Cecil of Pine Knot, KY, Betty Lawson and husband, Robert of Stearns, KY; grandchildren, Erik and Emma Bartley; numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be held on Monday, February 23, 2004, 8 PM in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary with Rev. Herbert Lee and Rev. Terry Baker officiating. Graveside service will be held on Tuesday, 1 PM at Calvary Cemetery in Corbin, KY. HOUSLEY, THELMA L. - age 78 of Jacksboro, passed away Friday, February 20, 2004 at the Lake City Health Care. She was a very dedicated faithful member of the Vasper Missionary Baptist Church. Sister Thelma sang for the glory of God her entire life and loved the Lord Jesus with all her heart, mind and soul. She loved to cook, travel, and shop. She also loved to spend time with her family and friends. Preceded in death by parents, Robert and Ruth Halstead Dabney; brother, Clyde Dabney, W.T. Dabney, Charles Dabney. Survived by husband of 56 years, James Housley of Jacksboro; daughter and son in law, Connie and Dr. Jame s R. "Kenny" Gillum of Jacksboro; granddaughters and husbands, Tonya and Todd Overbay of Jacksboro, Connetta and Tim Wyatt of Crossville; great grandchildren, Theron and Ashton Overbay of Jacksboro, Tyler Wyatt of Crossville; brother, Leonard Dabney of LaFollette; several nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be 7 p.m. Sunday February 22 at Vasper Missionary Baptist Church with Dr. James R. "Kenny" Gillum and Rev. Roger Henson officiating. Interment will be 2 p.m. Monday in Campbell Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. before funeral services.
