From The Oak Ridger 17 May 2004 Ruth McLemore Hardin Gillock, 98, Charles Sam Ivy Sr., 84, of Oak Ridge, Rebecca Lynn Phillips, 33, a resident of Wartburg, Margaret "Vivian" Jacox Zedler of Oak Ridge Herbert Sewell Brown Jr., 85, of Oak Ridge, Elmer Edward "Edd" Lowe, 67, of Clinton and formerly of Devonia, Donna Hafner, 69, of Coalfield, Wednesday, May 12, 2004, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Born May 5, 1935, in Westbourne, she was the daughter of Geraldine Hines of Coalfield and Donnie Hines, who is now deceased. Her family said she enjoyed bowling and was a Baptist. The father of her children, Claude Hafner, also died earlier. In addition to her mother, she is survived by her loving companion of 18 years, Richard Flannery; four sons, Ward Hafner and wife, Kathy, of Souix Falls, S.D., Dan Hafner and wife, Jeanie, and Jerry Hafner and wife, Kristin, all of New Orleans, La., and Ronald Hafner and Thrisha H. of Oak Ridge; her brother, Bill Hines, of Coalfield; her sister, Wilma Berryhill, of Coalfield; and by nine grandchildren. The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Sunday, May 16, 2004, in the chapel of Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs with the Rev. Mack Smith officiating. A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Monday, May 17, at Anderson Memorial Gardens on the Oliver Springs Highway in Clinton. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Bonita Cooke Woods, 83, of Knoxville, formerly a longtime resident of Oak Ridge, died Tuesday, May 11, 2004. She was a Baptist. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles D. Woods. Mrs. Woods is survived by her children and their spouses, Margaret and Joel Townsend, Norma Jean Carver, Charles E. and Penny Woods and Robert Woods; seven grandchildren, Tanya Townsend, Terrie Adams, Cindy Carver, Jeff Woods, and Robert, David and Shawn Woods; 11 great-grandchildren; her sister, Ruth Smith; and by three brothers, Lum Jr., Carl and Kenneth Cooke. Family and friends will meet at noon Saturday, May 15, 2004, at Mynatt Funeral Home in Knoxville. A graveside service will follow at 1 p.m. at Big Barrens Cemetery. The family requests any memorials be in the form of contributions to the Knoxville Animal Shelter, 3323 Division St., Knoxville, TN 37919. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the funeral home. Charles Ivy, 84, of Oak Ridge, died Friday, May 14, 2004, at his home. From The Oak Ridger 17 May 2004 Ruth McLemore Hardin Gillock, 98, died Saturday, May 15, 2004, at Hardin County Nursing Home. Born Dec. 10, 1905, in Savannah, she was the daughter of Gipson Hardin and Della Allison Hardin. Mrs. Gillock worked for Tennessee Eastman Corp. at the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant. During the war years she worked for the Oak Ridge school system. Mrs. Gillock lived in Savannah until 1943 and moved to Oak Ridge with her husband until his death, when she moved back to Savannah in 1996. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Oak Ridge and attended First Methodist Church in Savannah. She was also a member of the Eastern Star, the business and president of the Women's Club, and the Order of the Amaranth. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a half sister, Sally Brandon; three half brothers, Charlie Hardin, Will Hardin and Martin Hardin; three brothers, Glen Hardin, Jack Hardin and Tom Hardin; and by two sisters, Edith Shull and Mildred Bowling. Mrs. Gillock is survived by her son, the Rev. Edgar Hardin Gillock, of Savannah; her daughter, Mary Julia Gillock Hoppe, of Oak Ridge; a sister, Maude Cragg, of Savannah; and by 12 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. The funeral was to be at 1 p.m. Monday, May 17, 2004, at First United Methodist Church in Savannah with Will Wells and the Rev. Ed Gillock officiating. Burial will be at Savannah Cemetery. Shackelford Funeral Directors of Savannah Inc. is in charge of arrangements. Charles Sam Ivy Sr., 84, of Oak Ridge, died Friday, May 14, 2004, at his home. Born Oct. 23, 1919, in Houston, Miss., he was the son of Rosie Lee and Joseph P. Ivy. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army. Mr. Ivy has been a resident of Oak Ridge for more than 50 years. He was a member of Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church and F&A Masonic Lodge No. 354. His family said he enjoyed gardening, fishing and spending time with his family. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Rubie Mae Young Ivy, on Aug. 24, 2002. Mr. Ivy is survived by his stepmother, Stella Ivy; three sons, Charles S. Ivy Jr. and wife, Cherry, and Douglas Ivy, all of Oak Ridge, and Larry Ivy and wife, Marie, of Clinton; two daughters, Wanda Sue Jones and Marie Ivy, both of Oak Ridge; and by his brothers and sisters, Lillie Polk of Chicago, Ill., Mary Jackson of Elgin, Ill., Sharon Ivy of Verronhill, Ill., Jessie Ivy, Kevin Ivy, Rodger Ivy and Callie Ivy-James, all of Carbondale, Ill. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, who was like a sister, Nola Ivy, of Chicago; his sisters-in-law, which he thought so much of, Willie Mae Young and Robbie Young, both of Oak Ridge, Martha Garner of Dayton, Ohio, Mae Lee Harrold of Halls and Sarah Young of Osceola, Ark.; his aunt, Parlee Mitchell, who was very dear to his heart; a very special person, who he considered as one of his sons, Benjamin Thomas; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and several nephews, nieces, extended family and friends. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday, May 21, 2004, at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. T.L. Mims officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. Willie T. Booker, Jerome Kirk, Joseph Kirk, Booker Leslie, Ransom Belton and Benjamin Thomas will serve as pallbearers. The family requests any memorials be in the form of contributions to the Monday Evening Study Session of Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 195 Wilberforce Ave., Oak Ridge, TN 37830. Rebecca Lynn Phillips, 33, a resident of Wartburg, died Sunday, May 16, 2004, at the home of her parents in Wartburg. Born May 14, 1971, in Richlands, Va., she lived in Oliver Springs until adulthood, moving to Wartburg in 1997. Mrs. Phillips family said she was a loving daughter, wife, and mother who was sincerely dedicated to family and the care of her daughters. In addition to her family she enjoyed animals and working crafts. Mrs. Phillips worked as an optical technician at University Eye Surgeons in Knoxville. She was a member of the Oliver Springs Church of Christ. She is survived by her husband, Keith Phillips; two daughters, Audrey Rose Phillips and Acelynn Brianne Phillips, both of Wartburg; her parents, Steven S. Childress and Judith G. Christian Childress of Wartburg; her sister, Jennifer Evans and husband, Tim, of Wartburg; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Lonnie and Gladys Phillips of Wartburg; three nieces, Morgan Adams, Jessica Andrews, and Nikole Evans, all of Wartburg; and by several cousins, extended family members and friends. The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 18, 2004, in the chapel of Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs with the Rev. Joey Cagley officiating. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, at Anderson Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Margaret "Vivian" Jacox Zedler of Oak Ridge died Friday, May 14, 2004, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Born in Modesto, Calif., she was the daughter of the late Floyd and Ethel Jacox. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, a graduate of the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, a certified professional secretary and a former employee of Oak Ridge National Laboratory as the senior secretary to the director of the Instrumentation and Controls Division. She served as an Advisory Committee member of the Oak Ridge Girls Home and to the Business Department of Roane State Community College. According to her family, her interest was in history of American wars, particularly World War I. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard E. Zedler, in October 2000, and by her sister, Doris Slaughter of Oak Ridge, in 1991. Mrs. Zedler is survived by her brother, Donald C. Jacox, of Morganton, N.C.; her sister, Joanne J. Lovelace, of Staunton, Va.; her brother-in-law, Gerald M. Slaughter, of Oak Ridge; her nephew, Richard G. Slaughter, of Kissimmee, Fla., and wife, Lydia L. Slaughter; her niece, Donna Slaughter McKinley and husband, Kevin F. McKinley, and their three daughters, Marina, Liana and Camilla; her nephew, Graham Lovelace, of Jackson Hole, Wyo.; her nieces, Rebecca Lovelace Dellinger and husband, Billy Dellinger, of Staunton, Va., and Amanda Gardner and Heather Gardner. The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Monday, May. 17, 2004, in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Kerra Becker-English officiating. A private burial will be at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.
