SHARP, LAWRENCE "GENE" - of Knoxville, TN, died September 24, 2007 from complications of the aging process. He was one week short of his 79th birthday. Gene grew up in Kansas City, Kansas and worked as an electrician for many years. In his thirties, he felt the call of God to serve and returned to school. He graduated Hope College in Michigan (1966) and Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, VA, (1969). He became a member of the Presbytery and served as pastor of several churches in Virginia, Ohio and Kentucky, before serving for four years as a missionary in Zaire, Africa with his wife Peggy. They later served in the mission field in Haiti as well. Gene was honorably retired from the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and with his wife, Peggy, became active members in the community of the Powell Presbyterian Church for many happy years. Surviving are: his wife of 61 years, Peggy Sharp; his daughter, Loretta Jendryka, his son Larry Sharp; his son Mark Sharp and his wife Tammy; fi! ve grandchildren, Jacob Jendryka, Joshua Jendryka, Amy Jendryka, Douglas Jendryka, Bella Jendryka and Sarah Sharp; and his great-grandson Jacob Douglas Jendryka. SIMPSON, JOE HUGHLIN - age 85 of Charleston, TN, passed away on Wednesday, September 26, 2007 at his residence with his family by his side. Mr. Simpson, a lifelong resident of Bradley County, was of the Methodist faith and a member of the Masonic Lodge of Cleveland. He served in the United States Coast Guard during World War II, serving from June 1942 until March 1946. His tour of duty included both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. In 1948, Mr. Simpson, along with his father and brothers, began Simpson Construction Company. The firm, which specialized in bridge construction, built many highway and railroad bridges in Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee. During his career with Simpson Construction, he was also an owner of Ross Prestressed in Knoxville, TN and Cleveland Ready Mix. In 1986, Mr. Simpson left Simpson Construction Company and began Highland Construction Company which was also a bridge construction company. Mr. Simpson retired from Highland in 1990. Additionally,! Mr. Simpson was the owner of Outback Farms of Tennessee and Georgia which specialized in registered Black Angus cattle. He enjoyed big game hunting, bird hunting and fishing. He especially enjoyed his elk hunting trips to Idaho. He was preceded in death by: his wife, Josephine Morelan Simpson in 1990 and by his wife, Alice Lowe Simpson in 2003. She worked at the University of Tennessee for a total of 32 years in the Treasurer's office as a bookkeeper and as a supervisor. She was an avid bridge player, a devoted UT fan who loved to bake cookies and enjoyed spending valuable time with her dear friends.
