She was preceded in death by: her beloved husband, Charles A. Jackson; son, Joe W. Jackson; sisters, Helen Greene and Hazel Burchfield. She was rapidly approaching her 101st birthday when she died. "NeeNee", as she was known to family, had seen a century of dramatic and sometimes violent change. Born on September 24, 1906, she was named in honor of the recent appearance of Haley's Comet; her parents, Charles Beshear and Brilla Brittain Burchfield, both hailed from those mountaineers forcibly removed from Cade's Cove in what today is the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Her father was a coal mine manager; her sisters and she were born in small Kentucky mining camps that often no longer exist. She attended school at Cumberland College; came of age during the 1920s, when she was a flapper; and married during the Kentucky coal mine conf! licts of Harlan and Bell Counties during the Jazz Age and Depression. In the 1930s, she moved to Knoxville, TN, where her husband was the furniture manager for the downtown Sears Roebuck; in time, they would follow their son to Cocoa Beach, FL, where he worked as a NASA engineer during the Gemini and Apollo space programs. In 1998, she moved to Brighton Garden of Virginia Beach, where she was known for her humor and purple attire. She was as tough, loving and complex as the hills from which she sprang. During hunting trips, she would sit under a tree with a book and then point out to her husband all the game that he missed during his luckless rambles. She could argue for hours with her scientific son about evolution and the Bible, but it soon became obvious that this was merely an affectionate game. She taught her grandson the value of vanishing comfort foods like beets-pickled eggs and cracklin' bread at a time when anything stable was a refuge. In later years, she bounced! back from multiple assaults on her health, and was known to f! riends i n Virginia Beach as a symbol of the human will to survive. She is survived by: grandson, Joe W.
