JR. - age 92 of Holston Hills, died Thursday, September 13, 2007, at Shannondale of Maryville. He was a native of Knoxville and attended Knoxville High School and was a member of Washington Pike United Methodist Church for more than 65 years. He served on the church board and was a founding member of the Methodist Men's Club. He attended the University of Tennessee and was a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity. He retired from Standard Knitting Mills where he worked for more than 50 years rising from stock boy to executive vice president. He was a board member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce and Y's Men volunteers. Growing up in Park City, Mr. Hankins always participated in sports. He played volleyball with the YMCA and was selected to the 1942 All-Southern Team, and his team finished third nationally in 1948. He served as a board member of the Knoxville Softball Association. He was head basketball coach for Knoxville Catholic High School boys' and girl's ! teams from 1944-1949, winning district and regional championships. His 1946 boy's team was the first KCHS team to play and defeat Knoxville High School. He also was a TSSAA basketball official from 1940-1944. He coached teams in the Southern Appalachian League and won league championships in 1935, 1936, and 1942. His 1948 Pepsi-Cola team was the first women's semi-pro team in Knoxville and also won the league championship. He served as timer for the Knoxville Knights ice hockey team from 1961 to 1967. Mr. Hankins served as the Official Timer for the University of Tennessee men's basketball team from 1944 to 1984. He was honored by the University in 1984 for 40 years of service, and in 2004, he was recipient of a Special Recognition award from the Greater Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame. Mr. Hankins was an avid golfer and belonged to Holston Hills Country Club where he served as president for two terms. He was also a member of the East Tennessee Seniors Golf Association. He wa! s preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Dorothy Clark Han! kins. Born June 10, 1916 in Morgan County to John and Eliza Jones, she was a longtime member of Lakeview Baptist Church. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Laurel Chapter #22. Mrs. Howard served as a registered nurse for over 40 years. She was well-known in the Harriman community for her many years of service in her selected profession working for Dr. Thomas L. Bowman as a surgical nurse and assisting him in overseeing the care of his hospital patients. She was affectionately known as "Champ" to her co-workers. She worked as an emergency room nurse at Harriman General Hospital until her retirement; she then continued to serve the community as a volunteer Pink Lady at the hospital. She received her training at Chamberlain Memorial Hospital in Rockwood and Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga. Early in her training career, she worked in Wheeling, West Virginia, Chattanooga, and Harriman. She will be ! remembered for the concern and compassion shown too all of the patients in her care. He was a member of the "Greatest Generation" who answered his country's call and served it well. He was born in Norton, Virginia in 1923 and grew up roaming the mountains with his boyhood friends. He entered the US Air Force in 1942 and was based in North Africa as a pilot. Later, he graduated college on the GI Bill and was recalled during the Korean conflict. Years and a family later he served in Vietnam and retired from the Air Force in the early 1970's.
