TATE, EDITH WELLS - passed away unexpectedly early Sunday September 23, 2007. She was born in Crystal Springs, MS on October 26, 1919. She moved to Knoxville in the early 1940's to start a job with TVA, where, on a blind date met Naval Lt. Cmdr., and attorney, Oscar Tate, and they were married soon after. They lived in Miami and San Francisco before retuning to Knoxville at the end of the war. Edith graduated from Ole Miss University, was a member of Chi Omega Sorority, and remained an avid fan of the Rebels. Edith was a part-time fashion model often seen in local publications. Oscar and Edith were avid sports enthusiasts and the entire family rode horses. Following Oscar's death, Edith joined the staff of Congressman John Duncan in the late 1960's where she remained for multiple terms before becoming the regional administrator for Senator Bill Brock in a joint office shared with Senator Howard Baker. She retired as a government employee from Oak Ridge National Labs at 65 an! d enjoyed her retirement to the fullest. She was extremely interested in history, politics and environmental affairs and never hesitated to express her opinion. In her spare time she volunteered for the Knoxville Chapter of the American Red Cross and was recently recognized for more than 30 years of service. Always a devoted golfer, she could be found playing up to 18 holes, 3 or 4 times a week at Cherokee Country Club, where over the years she was awarded numerous trophies. Active until her very last day, she was an enthusiastic lover of life and asked the attending ER physician "if this will take long because I have a 9:40 a.m. Tee-time". She will be missed by many. UNGER, ROBERT F. - President of Chalet Ice Rinks, Inc. and primary shareholder of the Ice Chalet in Bearden, passed away early Sunday morning, September 23, 2007 at the age of 82. A native of Nuremberg, Germany, he was a highly acclaimed skater who won titles in ice and roller skating championships in Europe. Among his many achievements as a professional coach, Mr. Unger taught two German skating champions and a Ladies World Champion (1954). He was a featured performer in worldwide productions of Holiday On Ice and in European ice shows for 18 years before deciding to make his home in Knoxville in 1963. Under his management and eventual ownership, the Ice Chalet of Knoxville became a successful enterprise that has stood the test of time. More than four decades later, the Ice Chalet continues to offer a comprehensive skating program for figure skaters, hockey skaters, and the recreational skating community. He established skating schools in Knoxville and in Huntsville, Alabam! a. He was a leader in the development of the Ice Skating Institute, the international group that promotes recreational figure skating and hockey. He pioneered recreational skating competitions by initiating the annual Mississippi Valley District Invitational Team Competition in Knoxville in 1969. In 1977, this competition became the first international ISI skating competition. The 38th Annual MVDC was held in Knoxville in March of 2007. Mr. Unger earned his Masters Degree as a Figure, Freestyle, and Group Instructor, as well as Administrator, from the Professional Skaters Guild of America (PSGA). Twice named "Man of the Year" by the Ice Skating Institute, Mr. Unger was elected to membership in the Ice Skating Hall of Fame in 1983 for his contributions to the sport, and in the year 2000 he was presented with the Ice Skating Institute's Lifetime Achievement Award.
