POSTOW, BETSY CAROL - (Oct. 23, 1945-June 22, 2007) Professor Betsy Postow, a member of the philosophy department at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, since 1972, declined further treatment for a hepatic blood clot and died at Vanderbilt Hospital, Nashville, on June 22, 2007. She was buried on June 25 near her mother, Molly Steinman Postow, at Judean Memorial Gardens, Olney, Maryland. Reared in the Bronx and Queens, New York City, Betsy was selected to attend Hunter College High School for Girls, in Manhattan; her teachers there soon identified her talent for philosophy and encouraged her to pursue it. She did so at Harpur College, SUNY at Binghamton, where she was graduated summa cum laude in 1966. The following year she received the Tew Award for Excellence as the outstanding first year student in philosophy at Yale; she finished her Ph.D. at Yale in 1970. Although her principal academic interest was ethics, culminating in her book Reasons for Action (1999), Professo! r Postow also published and presented extensively in feminist theory and edited/contributed to a well received anthology Women, Philosophy, and Sport (1983). Several of the courses she offered were cross-listed in both the Philosophy Department and Women's Studies Program. It is typical of her spirit of collegiality that she also volunteered to serve as acting head of the philosophy department Fall 1993 and later to develop and offer courses in business ethics to meet student demand. During fall semester 2006 Professor Postow took sabbatical leave as a Visiting Scholar at the Ethics Institute of the University of Utrecht, The Netherlands. She thoroughly enjoyed the excitement of living abroad and of working with her welcoming Dutch colleagues. She remastered the skill of riding bicycles, although she did wreck two during her four month stay. Beyond her professional involvement, Betsy also loved both to hear and to make music: she played flute and recorder and deeply regrett! ed that she didn't sing well enough to join a choir; she did, ! however, pass away many miles of many car trips by belting out all stanzas, common or obscure, of many, many hymns. She also delighted in moving to music and regularly participated in Sacred Circle Dancing and for years was exemplarily faithful to her gym workout routines. And she made excellent use of her time commuting to and from work by listening to Books on Tape. But it was the pursuit of spiritual growth that became Betsy's passion. She approached it as she did all other things: she unremittingly studied, challenged, resolved, and practiced--and she grew. "Compassion" became her watchword. She delighted in meditation and used it to bring her thought and actions into line with her goals and her goals into line with the direction of her growth. Betsy was unique in her capacity for dedication, doggedness, loyalty, fairness, intensity, justice, and joy. She could be both serious and silly, but she was utterly unable to dissemble. Betsy is survived by her companion of twenty-seven ! years, Dianne Meagher, Knoxville; her father and hero, Maxwell Postow, Rockville, Maryland; her brother, Elliot Postow, Potomac, Maryland; her former sister-in-law, Joan Postow, Gaithersburg, Maryland; her nephew, Brian Postow and her niece, Lisa Postow; and her especially dear friend, Lorraine Hart, Knoxville. Betsy was formerly married to Robert Latta, now of Kyoto, Japan. Other survivors are faculty, staff, and graduate students of the UTK philosophy department; members of the beloved reading group that she founded; and her neighbors and her many friends. Plan to join a celebration of Betsy's life at a memorial service at the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church, 2931 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, from 2:00-4:00 PM on Saturday, September 15, 2007. The Philosophy Department at UTK has established the Betsy Postow Memorial Fund, which will use contributions to fund scholarships and fellowships for philosophy students. Her colleague Professor Richard Aquila has writte! n an especially moving personal and professional tribute to Be! tsy, whi ch can be found at http://web.utk.edu/%7ephilosop/postowmem.html ROBERTS, MARK ANTHONY - age 51 of Knoxville was born June 16, 1956 and went to be with the Lord on September 9, 2007.
