She married during WWII and moved with her husband, a member of the Air Force, to various stateside assignments. After WWII she lived in Munich and Wiesbaden Germany and Woodbridge, England for a total of six years. Norman Gaddis was a! prisoner of war during the Vietnam War and Hazel served as the NC coordinator for the National League of Families. Her activities involved contacting the families of North Carolina servicemen who were killed, missing in action or prisoner of war. As a coordinator, she worked directly with the Department of Defense and the State Department. After her husband retired in 1976, she was an active member of the Bermuda Run, North Carolina Garden Club and served as its President. Both she and her husband were active members of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Durham, North Carolina. She was a communicant of more than 25 years at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, where her greatest joy was working with the women of the Church and the Altar Guild, she was employed by the Bank of Maryville from 1956-1961. He was of the Pentecostal faith and graduate of Fulton High School. He was a painter with J.I.L & S Paint Company. A native of Cocke County, she was the middle child of twelve children born to John Franklin and Amanda Black Teague. All have preceded her in death except one sister, Lucile Hayes of Newport. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Benjamin J Watts and a daughter, Amanda Augusta. Living to cherish her memory are her children: Emma (Ron) Lane of Dunwoody, GA, Alvin (Jean) Watts of Newport, B.J. (Jan) Watts of Louisville, KY, Jerry (Linda) Watts of Newport, and Rebecca (Phillip) Kindred of New Market, TN; grandchildren, Claire Santuae, Scott Lane, Paige Felter, Kathy Ragan, Ben Watts, Beth Cruz, Rachel Livesay, Melissa Campbell, Dan Watts, Ricky Watts, Chad Watts, Jaime Watts, Robert Kindred and Michael Kindred. In her life she crafted over 100 quilts, most of which are cherished by family and friends.
