He was preceded in death by his parents, Andy Blackburn Harris and Merrill Atchley Harris, and his first cousin, Mary Ann Clark Scandlyn. He is survived by his wife, Gail; two sons, Pete and Michael Harris; two granddaughters, Abigail and Brianna Harris and former daughter-in-law, Sharon Joy Harris. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Marilyn Pilley of Nashville, Tennessee, brother-in-law, John C. Pilley of Spokane, Washington; special caregiver, Amy Webb of Lenior City. Jim was a 1954 graduate of Porter High School where he was Mr. Pioneer in the senior class. He graduated from the University of Tennessee with a B.S. in Agronomy and later received an M.S. in Agricultural Economics from Washington State University in Pullman. He served as an MP in the U.S. Army during the Berlin Call-up and taught Economics at Presbyterian College in Clinton, S.C. Due to hi! s father's failing health, he had to leave the Ph.D. program in Economics at Vanderbilt University in order to take over the family farm. He increased the dairy herd into a 200 cow dairy and the entire operation became known as Rivendell Farms. Over the years, he grew pick-your-own strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, and sold retail roses. The farm also produced beef cattle, hay, soybeans, field corn and sweet corn. Jim was very active in the community that he loved. He served as a voting delegate for Dairymen Inc. and was a board member for the Blount Farmers Co-op. For 30 years he served as a supervisor in the Blount County Soil Conservation District until his retirement in 2001. During his years of service in soil conservation, he was Area II District President of the Tennessee Association of Conservation Districts and was the Tennessee Association of Conservation Districts Vice-President for 4 years. He produced "Valley of Promise, a narrated slide program promotin! g good soil stewardship, placed in 33 East Tennessee Conservat! ion Dist ricts. In the early 70s, Jim was recognized as Conservation Farmer of the Year and in 1996 received the Distinguished Service Award in recognition of exceptional service to the Blount County Soil Conservation District. In 1998, he was featured in Channel 10's, The Heartland Series. In 1999, he received the Agriculture and Forestry Award presented by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation. Jim was a deacon at First Baptist Church, Knoxville and more recently, a member of Logan's Chapel United Methodist Church in Wildwood. He was a man known for his wit, humor, honesty, integrity, fairness and goodness. Memorial services will be scheduled at a later date. HURST, HOLLIS - born July 6, 1919 in Manchester Georgia, passed away peacefully in Hospice Savannah, Savannah, Georgia on Thursday, October 4th, 2007. Mr. Hurst was a Pearl Harbor survivor and served honorably as a U.S. Sailor aboard the U.S.S. Thorton throughout WWII in the South Pacific. After the war Mr. Hurst married Margaret Taylor from Savannah where they resided and raised a family of three children, stepson John G. Kelley, Sr.; son, Rodney Keith Hurst (deceased); and youngest son, Richard Hollis Hurst. The family lived together much of the time in Knoxville, Tennessee. Mr. Hurst retired from North Brothers Company, a Division of National Service Industries as a Branch Manager and Special Vice President and later built a successful contracting company in Knoxville, The Hurst Company, Inc. The daughter of James Bascomb Woolsey and Harriet Kelly Woolsey, Aileen was born in Knoxville on June 9, 1917. She attended Knoxville High School. A lifelong member of Washington Pike United Methodist Church, Aileen participated in and led many church activities. She began teaching Sunday School at age 17 and taught for over 70 years. She belonged to PTA and the Ossoli Circle, both of which organizations she served as president. Among Aileen's interest was Civil War history, of which she had an encyclopedic knowledge. Aileen loved reading, baseball, coffee and "Gone with the Wind." Aileen was predeceased in June 2005 by her husband of 68 years, Fred Douglas Loy, whom she met singing in the church choir, where they served for many years. MULLINS, LENA MAGGIO - 85, passed away Friday, October 5, 2007, at the Johnson City Medical Center, following a lengthy illness. Mrs. Mullins was a native of Greenville, Mississippi, and had lived most of her life in Johnson City. She was a daughter of the late Frank John Maggio and Rose Piraro Maggio originally from Cefalu, Sicily. Mrs. Mullins was preceded in death by her husband Rolfe C. Mullins and one son Michael Gerard Mullins; one brother and two sisters. She was an active and long time member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. Mrs. Mullins was a member of the Rosary Altar Society and was active in the development and support of St. Mary's School on the hill and the continued growth of St. Mary's Church. Mrs. Mullins and her late husband, Rolfe C. Mullins owned and operated Rolfe's Cafeteria in Johnson City for 34 years with other locations in Greeneville and Knoxville. Born February 12, 1920 in Harrisburg, PA, she was the daughter of Hazel M. Groce and Guy W. Zeigler. The widow of Rev. Dr. Lemuel Columbus Sparks, Jr., she is survived by her children, David and Lynne (Carpenter) Sparks of Hickory, NC; John and Susan (Steadman) Sparks and Stephen and Mary Ann (Hathaway) Sparks, both of Nashville, Jane M. Sparks of Kennesaw, GA; 10 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Schooled at New Cumberland High and Harrisburg School of Nursing, Betty joined the US Navy Nurse Corps at graduation in 1942, serving proudly in England during the D-Day Invasion. She was discharged February 3, 1945 to marry Sparks who was in the Navy Chaplaincy. With her husband of 59 years, Betty served parishes in Blacksburg and Front Roya! l, VA, Silver Springs, MD, Kingsport and Knoxville. The Sparks family first moved to Knoxville in 1954 where Rev. Sparks ministered to the congregation of St. John's Lutheran, then on to Holy Trinity Lutheran in Kingsport. They returned to Knoxville in 1989, called back to St. John's where Pastor Sparks served, was named Pastor Emeritus and Betty was a member at her death. In addition to rearing four children, Betty worked as a nurse, both in Kingsport at Holston Valley Community Hospital and in Knoxville at St. Mary's Hospital.
