ERPENBACH, JEROME JOSEPH - age 89, of Knoxville, died on Monday, October 1, 2007. He was the son of the late William Winand and Ida Jesse Erpenbach and was born on May 2, 1918, in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. He attended the University of Wisconsin, Menomonie and in his last year was chairman of the student government organization. At graduation in 1940 he was employed as an instructor in the engineering faculty of Georgia Tech in Atlanta. He later changed employment to the Tennessee Valley Authority in Chattanooga. He volunteered for military service during World War II. As an aviation cadet he received a military commission at Yale University and served as an officer in the Air Force. After separation from the military he returned to TVA and worked in personnel development and management, including head of the training staff for the TVA Office of Power. In 1967 he transferred to the Division of Personnel in Knoxville as an assistant manager. Later he managed the TVA staff for ed! ucation and manpower development until his retirement in 1983. He was a member of the American Society for Engineering Education, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Engineers Council for Professional Development and the American Society of Training Directors. He was involved in many community activities. For more than fifteen years, he was in adult leadership positions on the district and council levels of the Cherokee Area Council of the Boy Scouts in Chattanooga. He was the chairman of the building committee for the establishment of St. John Neumann Catholic Church in west Knoxville and served for the first two years as the Parish Council Chairman. He was a life member of the Knights of Columbus and of the Bearden Lions Club. After retirement, he and his wife became members of Friendship Force International. They participated in a number of home-to-home exchange visits with people in other countries, resulting in lasting friendships. Besides his parents, he was pre! ceded in death by: his brother, Lloyd William and sister-in-la! w Lorrai ne (Hehli) Erpenbach; his sister, Marie Elizabeth and brother-in-law Ernest William Brickner; and brother-in-law, Lawrence Braaten. He is survived by: his wife of sixty-one years, Dorothy (Faltesek) Erpenbach; and their three sons, Jerome Joseph Jr. and wife Suzanne, Dr. John Ernest and wife Natasha, and Dr. James David. He was named Legionnaire of the Year in 2003 in recognition of his work. Last year he was named as an Honorary Life Member of the American Legion, the organization's highest award. As a member of the Sevierville Lions Club, where he served as president, he was recognized as Lion of the Year and as a Melvin Jones Fellow, the organization's top honor. She was a resident of Knoxville from 1934 until 2004 and a member of Fifth Avenue Baptist Church since the 1930s. She taught high school and came to Knoxville to work for TVA in 1934. She also taught at the University of Tennessee and worked for St. John's Episcopal Church (now St. John's Cathedral). Mrs. Parrott was a Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII. She was delightful with a dry wit and a sparkle in her eye! She was predeceased by her husband, William E. Parrott and a sister, Eleanor C. Copelan. After graduating from Hancock County High School, he enlisted in the Air Force, and attended Canisius College for flight training in Buffalo, New York. He became a flight engineer and received his aerial gunnery wings. Known as "Tennessee" by his buddies, he was honorably discharged from the U.S. Air Force on March 11, 1946. As a crewmember of the B-17 bomber, being a World War II veteran was one of the greatest honors of his life. He attended Bell Avenue Baptist Church with his family, in Knoxville, Tennessee, where he served as a deacon. He was a real estate broker for many years, and retired from Volunteer Realty. After retirement, he moved to Sevierville, Tennessee, and joined First Baptist Church of Sevierville, where he attended for several years. One of his greatest joys was being a greeter each Sunday, and attending his Sunday School class! and morning worship service. His wishes were for all to know how much he loved his country, his church, and his family. He was a kind and Godly man, of great humility, whose strong love for his daughter will always be cherished by her. The love he unselfishly gave to his family and friends will be his greatest legacy, and will stay in our hearts forever.
