CHARLOTTE SNIFFEN - age 82 of Harriman, passed away Tuesday, June 12, 2007 at the home of her daughter, Betty, in Pascagoula, Mississippi. As she made her transition, she was surrounded by her daughters, Linda and Betty, her son-in-law, Leslie Jerome, her nurse, Samantha Williams, RN from Hospice of Light and minister, Rev. John Tucker, of Safe Harbor Methodist Church. Fondly called, "Miss Charlotte", she was a homemaker, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother not only to her biological family, but to an extended family of friends and loved ones. Professionally, she worked for over thirty years with the Tennessee Department of Conservation in the Forestry Division. She was active in the Woods Chapel Methodist Church and First United Methodist Church in Harriman, where she served as a district youth leader. She was a Cub Scout leader, worked within the Juvenile Court System, and was a founding member of the Cornstalk Heights Historic District. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Nelson Bensey, Jr., who died July 4th, 2006. She was also preceded in death by: her parents, Edgar H. Sniffen and Minnie Myers Sniffen, as well as two sisters, Dorothy Sniffen, and Mrs. Catherine Gallaher; three brothers, Joe, Mark, and Sam Wheeler. She is survived by: her children, Linda K. BEWLEY, DALE H. - age 64 of Farragut, a loving husband, wonderful father and grandfather, went to be with his Lord & Savior Tuesday, June 19, 2007 after an extended battle with esophageal cancer. Dale was a member of First Baptist Church, Concord, where he served as Deacon and Sunday School teacher for many years. Dale graduated from Vine Grove High School and The University of Kentucky with BS and MS degrees in Metallurgical Engineering. He earned his MBA degree from Murray State University, and had his Professional Engineering License. After spending 14 years at the Paducah, Kentucky gaseous diffusion plant, and 14 years with Martin Marietta Energy Systems, Oak Ridge, he retired as Director of Quality for the five plants in Oak Ridge, TN; Paducah, KY and Portsmith, OH. During his career, he served on various state committees for conservation of energy. He also served 14 years as technical member of Baptist Hospital's Institutional Review Board. Dale was a man of extraordinary faith, and his love of people led him to eagerly reach out to others which triggered his love of missions. He made trips to Brazil, China, Thailand, and Nicaragua. He was a person who truly loved life and people. He always showed great compassion and was an inspiration to those who knew him. He will always be remembered for his strong character, dependability, generosity and positive attitude. He also enjoyed sports and was an ardent UK basketball fan. (JIM) - was born in Shelby County, Tennessee on January 2, 1938 the son of the late Freeman Arguyle and Evelyn Cammack Hopper. Mr. Hopper received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Memphis State University on May 28, 1960 and Juris Doctor (magna cum laude) from Memphis State University School of Law on January 13, 1965, where he was a member of The Delta Theta Phi Law Fraternity. Mr. Hopper received his law license issued by the State of Tennessee on August 14, 1965. Mr. Hopper was licensed to practice in the Tennessee Supreme Court on November 3, 1965, to practice in the United States District Court-Western District on February 4, 1966, to practice in the United States Supreme Court on November 18, 1970, to practice in the 6th Circuit, United States Court of Appeals on December 18, 1990, to practice in the United States District Court-Middle District on May 24, 1991 and starting in 1969 he served as Savannah City Attorney. Mr. Hopper was a founding member and law partner of Hopper & Plunk, PLLC until his retirement in 2005. Judge Jarvis was born in Knoxville on Feb. 28, 1937, to Howard F. Jarvis, a highly regarded trial lawyer in his day, and his wife, Eleanor. He had strong ties in Blount County, however, that went back to when his father bought Blackberry Farm and Inn. Judge Jarvis ended up spending his last two years at Maryville High School. Then he attended the University of Tennessee, where he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity and was awarded the Significant Sig Award in 1998. He received a law degree from the University of Tennessee College of Law in 1960. He went into practice with his father and was in private practice from 1960 to 1972. His father's law partner, Paul Parker, taught him how to fly fish and handle a shotgun, resulting in longtime hobbies of fishing and hunting. He was appointed judge of the Law and Equity Court for Blount County in 1972, serving five years. Then he was elected judge of the 30th Judicial Circuit Court in Blount County, a position he held until 1984, when President Ronald Reagan appointed him U.S. District Judge for the Eastern District of Tennessee. Judge Jarvis became a second judge in the district, a new position, at a time when U.S. Sen. Howard H. Baker Jr. was Senate majority leader. The district's remaining judges will take over his part-time caseload. The judge was a member of the bar associations at the local and state levels and the Federal Judges Association, and he formerly was on the executive committee of the Tennessee Trial Judges Association and a member of the Tennessee Judicial Conference, of which he was president in 1983-84. He was a member of the American Inn of Court Hamilton Burnett Chapter and the Judicial Conference of the United States Committee on Codes of Conduct 1994-2000. Judge Jarvis was instrumental in establishing the Historical Society of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee, Inc. He also was a past member of the Board of Advisers of the UT College of Law and the Great Smoky Mountains Conservation Association. He was a member of the Board of Directors of Maryville College 1986-1991; the board of the Detoxification Rehabilitation Institute of Knoxville; and the board of the Metropolitan Knoxville YMCA. Judge Jarvis leaves his wife, former Knox County General Sessions Court Judge Gail Stone Jarvis; former wives who are the mothers of his five children, Martha Stapleton Jarvis of Tampa, FL and Pam Duncan Miller of Maryville. He was born on July 2, 1921, on East Fifth Avenue, to Frank Leon Kerr and Leo Justus Kerr. Jim was a graduate of Old Knox High School in 1939, where he was President of the KHS National Honor Society and the golf team. Jim attended the University of Tennessee where he was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity, the Scarabbean Society, and ROTC Scabbard and Blade. Jim was a letterman on the UT Golf Team and played saxophone in the UT Band. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Management in 1943. He immediately left for basic training in the United State Army. Following the war, Jim married Nancy Wilkie of Winchester, England, on January 9, 1947. Jim worked 20 years for the family business, Kerr Motor Company, followed by 25 years as VP of Brownlee Construction Company. His grandfather, Reverend David Monroe Kerr, helped found Greenback High School and Greenback First Presbyterian Church. Jim Kerr has been nominated for the Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame for his domination of the local golf scene in the mid-1950's. Jim was a founding member of the Knoxville Downtown Sertoma Club. He was a member of Sequoyah and Lake Hills Presbyterian Churches. Jim was said to be Nancy's best volunteer as she became well known for her work with HOSPICE services at Ft. Sanders Hospital. Preceding him in death were: his parents; his wife, Nancy Wilkie; sister-in-law, Margo Wilkie-Rogers, brother-in-law, Jim Rike and sister Elizabeth (Kerr) Rike. Most of all, he loved to read, and leaves behind a huge collection of books. Henry was a devout Christian, a loving husband and a wonderful father. He was curious about people and things around him and was al-ways ready to engage in a conversation. Henry never met a stranger and he never turned his back on anyone who needed his help. With her love for children, she enjoyed conducting preschool lessons for youngsters in Norris. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Anna Shulta Gottlieb. Smith and Emma Legg Jones of Montgomery, Alabama, died at Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge on June 17, 2007. He is survived by: Louise, his wife of 58 years. Mr. Smith, a graduate of West Point and the University Illinois, spent his early working years as an officer in the US Army. He then worked for Union Carbide at the Y-12 plant in Oak Ridge until, without explanation, he was abruptly and insultingly removed from his job as Division Director of Product Engineering and Scheduling by his vice president. He served later on the general staff before retiring as Director and Manager of Communications for Lockheed Martin Nuclear Division. Mr. Smith worked for many charitable organizations both before and after his retirement in 1993. He participated in community theater productions at the Oak Ridge Playhouse, including "A Thousand Suns." He was particularly involved as an early member and president of Oak Ridge Institute for Continued Learning (ORICL). The body is to be cremated and the ashes distributed over the Kentucky farm owned by daughter Evelyn and Chuck Keiser.
