Neal, passed away at her home, Tuesday June 19, 2007 after a long illness. John will always treasure the wonderful times and great love they shared. Ellen was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana on March 18, 1953, spent most of her youth in Hendersonville, North Carolina. She attended the University of Tennessee, Knoxville for both her undergraduate and graduate education, and remained in Knoxville after discovering the wonders of Neyland Stadium. She was always happy to recall their attendance when the Lady Vols won their championship in Charlotte, and when she and John shared both a wonderfully romantic trip and a great evening watching the Vols in the Fiesta Bowl. Ellen was a Volunteer through and through, and one of the few women who actually looked marvelous in a bright orange sweater. And once, and only once, she battled a magnificent Mexican sailfish. Ellen passed away at her home on Tuesday, June 19, after a long illness. She adored her three sons, Matthew, 28, Fisher, 23, and Tyler, 20. She never missed a play, a baseball, soccer, rugby, or basketball game, and provided invaluable assistance in helping Fisher and Tyler become Eagle Scouts. Ellen was such a sweet wife that she actually managed to enjoy life with a husband who flew a hawk through one of her bridge parties, raised a wolf, a flock of wild turkey, a flock of peacocks, goats that ate her camellias, and endless snakes, birds of prey, and I don't know what all. She even spent two years assisting John in escorting Smokey III and Smoke IV during many UT football games. Ellen was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ, most recently, the Laurel Church of Christ on Kingston Pike in Knoxville. She loved her dear friends with whom the Neal's had attended church and college, such as Richard and Mary Stair Joe and Debra Durnin, Joe and Melinda Connell, Pat and Anthony Fuller, and George and Nancy Prosser. She was a brilliant and beautiful woman, with a thriving career as a consulting dietitian for numerous nursing homes and hospitals. Not only was she successful in her career, and made virtually perfect grades while attending the University of Tennessee, but Ellen was a devoted wife who nursed Matthew during a terrible battle with meningitis, and was John's steadfast companion through severe case of melanoma. She had many wonderful qualities for which John, Matthew, Fisher, and Tyler are truly grateful, and feel that she blessed their lives with her own. Ellen is also survived by her parents, J.B. and Lucille Henderson of Hendersonville, North Carolina; her sisters Lisa Curtis and Jane Bryant; her brother, Joe Henderson and a host of nieces and nephews. We could hardly forget her beloved bridge group with whom she religiously played since college. Funeral service 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Laurel Church of Christ with Dr. Larry Fields officiating. Interment will be private. If we ever had a song to call our own, it was Maria Muldauer's "Midnight at the Oasis." Ellen was my belly dancer, my prancer, and I was her sheik over, and over again through many wonderful years. We had a wonderful, loving, and passionate relationship that was beyond compare. I will treasure her forever. The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:30 p.m. Saturday at Laurel Church of Christ.
