He was a member of Sequoyah Hills Presbyterian Church where he served as Elder and was a Stephen Minister. He was also a diligent worker with Gideons International for many years. John had been educated at Knoxville High School, The University of Tennessee, and Harvard Law School. He served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II and obtained the rank of Lt. Colonel. He very successfully practiced law in the law firm of Fowler, Rowntree and Fowler with his grandfather, James Alexander Fowler, uncles, Harley and Frank and cousin Sam Fowler. In recent years he authored a short book about his association with his grandfather, uncles and cousin in the firm, and about an important anti-trust case on which he worked very hard and won. This was published and given to friends and relatives. He felt a great bond of friendship to "The Coffee Club", a group of longtime friends who met for lunch and camaraderie. Family reunions and close ties with siblings and cousins were a real pleasure for many recent years. Among his greatest joys were travels to places far and near with his wife, his children and grandchildren. Tony was a member of St. Elizabeth's Episcopal Church and was a former Vestry member. He was a member of AA with 25 years of sobriety on June 6, 2007. Tony was retired from Eastman Kodak with 32 years of service in International Marketing. He was an avid photographer, loved classical music and New Orleans Jazz, and was a voracious reader. He was an athletic swimmer and enjoyed his daily swims at the YMCA. He was the husband of Joan, his wife of 55 years; father to Julie Salo of Fairport, NY and Trevor Western of Sudbury, MA; father-in-law to Arthur Salo and Donna Western; grandfather to Andrew and Jessica Salo, Christopher and Heather Western, Aaron, Hannah and Nathan Gerry; brother to David Western and Anne Hunns of Devon, England; brother-in-law to Sue Western and Colin Hunns also of Devon, England; uncle to Mark, Lynda, and Stuart, much loved by Clarita and Debbie.
