    2. ALLEN, CHARLES LEE (CHARLIE) - age 79 of Knoxville, native of Sevier County, son of the late George G. and Lillie Mae Bradley Allen, died Monday June 11, 2007 in Greenwood, South Carolina. He was a member of Central Baptist Church, Bearden and the Kings Men Sunday School Class. Charlie, who retired from Martin-Marietta, was a veteran of the Korean War and a Member of the American Legion. He was also preceded in death by his loving wife, Julia Ann (Judy) Allen, and by his son, George M. Allen. "RAY" - age 80 of Tellico Village, passed away peacefully on June 11, 2007 at the NHC of Farragut after a long and courageous struggle with multiple health issues. He was born November 8, 1926 to the late Robert and Ruth Mears in Dover, Ohio. Ray was the husband of 54 years, a proud father of three sons, a loving grandfather to 5 grandchildren, and a mentor to his numerous basketball players. He was a former member of Messiah Lutheran Church. Ray graduated from Dover High School in 1944 developing a great interest in basketball after coaching their sixth grade basketball team to a championship season. He worked summers in a steel mill to earn tuition to Miami University of Oxford, Ohio where he played varsity basketball and was a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity. After graduation he began his successful career coaching at Cadiz High School in Ohio, then enlisted in the Army during the Korean conflict. He coached at West Technical High School in Cleveland, Ohio for several years, and then took the head coaching position at Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio where in 1961 they won the NCAA Small College National Championship. In 1962 he assumed the head coaching position at the University of Tennessee where he had exceptional success for fifteen seasons amassing a .747 winning percentage during his coaching career. In 1980 Ray was hired by Chancellor Charles Smith to assume Athletic Director duties as the University of Tennessee at Martin where his leadership brought renewed interest and conference championships to many of their sports programs. Ray retired to Tellico Village in Loudon County in 1990 where he enjoyed attending UT men's basketball, Lady Vol basketball, UT football haves, and annual trips to the NCAA final four. Ray was elected to seven different Halls of Fame including the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame, the Cradle of Coaches at Miami University, and the NABC 50 years honoree in 1997.
