He was of the Baptist faith and a member of Sevier Heights Church. Jack was a 1956 graduate of Young High School and attended the University of Tennessee on a football scholarship. He was an avid fisherman and his favorite fishing buddy was his recently departed grandson "Will" who was killed in a tragic car accident on June 11th of this year. He was a veteran of the Air Force and served with the Air National Guard 151st Fighter Interceptor Squadron in Ramstein, Germany during the Berlin Wall crisis. He retired from Norfolk Southern Railway with 33 years of service. The last 11 years of service was spent as General Chairman for the United Transportation Union Grievance Committee where he represented engineers, conductors and trainmen belonging to that organization. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Jack was preceded in death by parents, Bill and Kathleen Barbee; sister, Bette McCarter; beloved grandson, Will Ridenour. BARKLEY, ALICE JEANNE - 88 of Knoxville, died early in the morning on July 31, 2007. Miss Barkley was born in White Pine TN, and moved to Knoxville when she was 18. She attended Knoxville Business College and the University of Tennessee. Her first job was at Lawson McGhee Library. She went on to work for the University for over 40 years in the Alumni Affairs office. Co-workers and alumni knew her as "the party girl" as she was responsible for arranging many of the class reunions and other alumni affairs during her tenure at UT. Jeanne was a 50 plus year member of First Presbyterian Church where she had sung in the choir and was active in the business women's circle. An avid student of history, Jeanne was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of the Confederacy, East Tennessee Historical Society, Association for the Preservation of Tennessee Antiquities, and the Blount Mansion Association. Genealogy was a passion with Jeanne. She was proud to have traced her family history back to the 1100's in England. Her ancestors donated some of the land for Washington College Academy in Jonesboro, TN. Jeanne served on the board of Trustees of Washington College Academy for many years and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Humanities by the President and Board. She also served on the board of directors of the Friends of the Library and the speakers Bureau for the Celebration of the Bicentennial of the Constitution. She was active in The Scottish Society, The Retirees of Tennessee Association, The Thursday Club, the Quarterback Club, and the Round Ball Club. Miss Barkley was also an avid Fan of UT Athletics. He talked often of his nephew Torre's talent in art, and was extremely proud of all his Nieces and Nephews' academic and athletic talents. He was always more than happy to speak about Whitney Goldston's multi-sport accomplishments, as well as Cassy's academic achievement and Jill's vibrant and loving personality. Shane reveled in his Great nieces and nephews' talents and personalities as well. He was always quick to tell stories about Garrett's latest experiences and Madison's beauty and courage. He was proud of Ryne and Tucker's skills with baseball and academic achievements. Alyssa and Baylee touched Shane with their beauty and charm and Aleena, who Shane called "his pretty little red-haired girl". Shane and his business partner and best friend, Waylon Lambert of Knoxville, made names for themselves as antique dealers all over the Eastern United States. Recently and regularly, their firm, Flint Gap Antiques, attended shows in Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Ohio and Virginia. The pair operated a very successful E-Bay business and shipped many items all over the world as well. Mr. Shane Kevin Goldston was a unique, talented and loving individual who enjoyed life to the fullest up until the time of his unexpected death. He was a graduate of Powell Valley High School, the class of 1938 and a graduate of Draughons Business College in Knoxville. He is a veteran of World War II having served in the Pacific Theatre. Boyd was a retired farmer and for many years he was a Director in the Claiborne Farmers Co-Op. He was a loving husband and father and a dear friend to many.
