NINE, ROBERT EDWARD, LTCOL USAF RET. - age 74, of Fountain City passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 21, 2007 at St. Mary's Residential Hospice surrounded by his loving family. He was a member of Fountain City United Methodist Church and member of the Christian Homebuilders Sunday School Class. Born August 7, 1933 in Dandridge to the late Joseph and Margaret Nine. Graduate from the University of Tennessee with a degree in engineering physics and the rank of 2nd Lt in the Air Force. He earned his masters degree in engineering physics from the University of Oklahoma. He served in Viet Nam as a USAF fighter pilot where he earned the Distinguished Flying Cross. Upon retirement from the Air Force he worked 20 years as a nuclear physicist for the Dept. of Energy in Washington DC. While working he taught an early morning class in physics at the Northern Virginia Community College. Retirement did not slow him down as he concentrated on and accelerated his work for the Lord by e! arning his Local pastors License and was serving an appointment to the Fountain City UMC with his duties only in Prison Ministries. He was the founding member on Kairos Prison Ministry, Torch Ministry in the youth detention centers in East Tennessee. He also was very active and devoted to the Focus Prison Ministries He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Myra Creswell Nine; daughters and son-in-law Lexi and David Gaber, Centreville, VA; Marci Villanueva, Woodbridge, VA; son and daughter-in-law Robert Edward and Donna Nine II, Knoxville; grandchildren Jason Scott and Jaime Gray; brother Jerry Nine Dumfries, VA, and many other loving family and friends. In addition to her parents, Edithe was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Claude Norris Sims; two sisters, Flora Lucas and Gracie Meadows; and eight brothers, Lundy, C. R., Elmer, Sam, Estle, James, Lacy and Nathan Meadows. Survivors include her daughters, Brenda Sims Palmer and Don Palmer, Knoxville, Tennessee; Sonja (Nathan) Meadows, Rocky River, Ohio; Rema (Sam) Meadows and Rosa Meadows Nicely, Beckley, WV as well as nephews and nieces. Born on July 3, 1920, he is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Wilma nee Mauldin and children, Patricia Gail, Linda Susan, John Edwin, Sara Judith Nan and David Cleveland. He is survived as well by 12 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. The recipient of the Bronze Cross and Purple Heart, Edwin Stokely served in the Army during World War II and during the Korean Conflict. He worked for the Knoxville News Sentinel and then the Atomic Energy Commission in Oak Ridge as Public Information Director. He continued to serve in the Department of Energy in Germantown, Maryland. He retired in 1978, moving to Dunedin, Fla. An avid golfer who accumulated eight Holes-in-One, Edwin Stokely was a member at Countryside County Club for nearly 30 years, having organized and managed several leagues including "The Stokely League" established in 1982.
