He was born in Loudon County, TN in 1914. About five years later the family moved to Knoxville. They drove their milk cow and hauled their belongings in a horse drawn wagon and Old Bill rode the cow most of the way. He began work at age 14 and married Bonnie in 1939. He served in the Navy during World War II where he served as a gunner's mate/3 aboard a little wooden ship in the North Atlantic. His ship, the U.S.S. YMS-5, a mine sweeper, sailed out of Argentina, Newfoundland. In 1944 they participated in sinking a Nazi submarine capturing the captain and crew. In 1945 they sailed from Argentina headed for Japan. Before arriving in Japan, the Japs surrendered and the War was over. He was always proud of his military service. After the War, Bill and Bonnie moved to Halls Crossroads where they had a little farm on which they raised some cattle, ponies, and bird dogs. Bill's favorite pastimes were raising a garden, bird huntin', trout fishing and reciting poetry. He had several bird dogs in his life and some were notable as pointers and retrievers, some as flushing dogs, and a few were just hounds. Big Jake, Ginger, Mac, and Suzi were some of the more notable dogs. Ginger and Mac were the best pointers and retrievers he ever had. They minded their own business, did their jobs, and hunted close. Big Jake was another story. He was a big old rangy short- haired pointer. Jake didn't understand the finer points of hunting close. When turned out of the pen or truck he began runnin' and didn't slow down or turn his head until he had gone about a mile. Jake was also remarkably fond of yard birds as opposed to quail and grouse as he should have been. He embarrassed Dad more than once when he was turned out around somebody's barn by treeing the nearest cat, fighting with and whipping the nearest dog or catching the first yard bird he came to which he would then proudly retrieve to Dad with the owner watching and want Dad to put it in his hunting coat. Dad bought several chickens this way. Suzi was a long-haired setter. She was a gentle dog, good pointer and retriever who mostly minded her business except when traveling. When riding she would get bored and get into trouble like the time Dad and Number Two Son (Jim Larue) had left their hunting coats in the back of the truck with Suzi. Suzi apparently thought Number Two's hunting coat did not need a collar and she promptly chewed it off. Dad finally felt bad about Jim's neck getting cold and in 2002 gave Jim his own hunting coat just before moving to Roanoke.
