ARMSTRONG, CHARLES HARRIS, JR. - of Jefferson City, born September 20, 1929, went home to be with his Heavenly Father on August 29, 2007, at St. Mary's Residential Hospice Center. He helped found St. Barnabas Episcopal-Lutheran Church in Jefferson City, the Church of the Annunciation, Newport, and was a member of All Saints' Episcopal Church, Morristown, where he served as Senior Warden, Layreader and Chalice Bearer. He was a graduate of Birmingham-Southern College where he received a B.S. in Geology and was a member of Sigma Gamma Epsilon honorary fraternity and a brother in Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity, serving as President during his senior year. Charles did graduate work at Emory University where he met his wife of 49 years, Dr. Anne Collier Armstrong. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He retired from United States Steel (USX Corporation) after 31 years of service. As a professional geologist and an amateur astronomer, Charles was a man of science. He was ! active and served as chairman of the East Tennessee section of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers. He was active in civic and community work, serving as President of the College Community Council and President of the Jefferson City Friends of the Library during the time the library was enlarged. He also was an active Scouter in the Smoky Mountain Council of Boys Scouts of America, having served as Pack Master, troop committeeman, District Commissioner and Chairman of the Scout Show. Charles also loved genealogy and Scottish-American activities and he served as President of the Armstrong Clan Society, the Knoxville Scottish Society, Chairman of the Tarbolton Burns Club, a Director of the Gatlinburg Scottish Games and adjutant of Post 328 of the Scottish American Military Society. He was a Knight of the Sovereign Military Order of the Temple of Jerusalem and was an F.S.A. Scot. He loved to travel and enjoyed sailing, having founded and ser! ved as first Commodore of the Cherokee Lake Sailing Club. He w! as a lov ing and devoted husband, father and friend. Charles was preceded in death by: parents, Charles Harris Armstrong and Mary Fitch Armstrong of Birmingham, Alabama. BOYANTON, MARYBETH - 60, of Farragut, TN died mid-day Wednesday August 29th after a long battle with cancer. She was an artist and poet that served on the Board of the Knoxville Writers' Guild (KWG). Some of her poetry has been published in New Millennium Writings, Breathing the Same Air: An East Tennessee Anthology and Literary Lunch. She was poetry co-editor of the online journal The Southerner. She also was an assistant editor of poetry for New Millennium Writings, and established the KWG Robert Burns Poetry Award/Terry Semple Memorial Contest in 2000 in memory of her late husband. A working studio artist, Marybeth's visual mediums included oils, watercolors, pastels and dyes on silk. Her silk work was displayed at Nomad Gallery on Market Square in Knoxville, where she was the featured artist in the spring of 2002, and one of her silk paintings was featured on a cover of New Millennium Writings. She had a painting degree from the University of Houston - Clear Lake, and di! d graduate work in art history in Italy in 1978. Her artwork reflects the influences from her time at the Charles W. Hawthorne School of Art in Provincetown, MA. She was affiliate director of the Scottish Society of Knoxville, and editor of the society's bimonthly newsletter, the Tartan Times. Of Irish and Scots-Irish ancestry, Marybeth was on the board of the Scottish Society of Knoxville, where she served as editor of the organization's newsletter. Marybeth was retired from a 25-year career as a communications expert specializing in graphic design, writing and editing print advertising and corporate publications. A native of the Port Arthur, TX, she lived in Houston for many years before moving to Knoxville in 1985. Arrangements by Cross Funeral Home, LaFollette. MARLAR, WILLARD CECIL - 85, of Oak Ridge, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2007, while in the presence of his family. He had been diagnosed with cancer several weeks before and had remained at home with his family until being taken to Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge on Tuesday. Born May 20, 1922, in Burnsville, Miss., he was the son of Charlie L. Marlar Sr. and Alice Leo Hampton Marlar. He was a graduate of Burnsville High School, attended Northeast Mississippi Junior College and Florence State Teachers College in Alabama. As a paratrooper with the 11th Airborne Division of the U.S. Army, he was a World War II veteran. He and his wife, Mackie Mae Robinson Marlar, were married on June 6, 1943, in Corinth, Miss. They moved to Oak Ridge in 1944 but returned to Mississippi in 1947. They made a permanent move to Oak Ridge in 1953. The Marlars celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary in June. Mr. Marlar had been employed with Union Carbide Nuclear Division until h! is retirement in 1974. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and an active volunteer in the Oak Ridge community. He was an especially active volunteer in Oak Ridge High School athletics. The Willard Marlar Courage & Determination Award was created in his honor and is given each year to an ORHS football player who exemplified courage and determination in overcoming physical barriers. He was the recipient of the Wildcats' Dedication Award in 2007. An avid wildflower gardener, he also enjoyed traveling, fishing and sports. He loved and was dedicated to his family. In addition to his wife of 64 years, Mackie Mae Marlar, Mr. Marlar is survived by two sons, Jerry Marlar and his wife, Ginger, of Longview, Texas, and Terry Marlar and his wife, Claudia, of Loudon; two daughters, Celia Raines and her husband, Lynn, of Clinton, and Lynda Marlar of Oak Ridge; and two sisters, Thelma Morris of Oak Ridge and Ann Gordon of Evergreen, Colo. He will be remembered as a wonderful husband, father, and friend. He was a gifted listener and conversationalist and always enjoyed talking with family and friends. He enjoyed spending time with his daughters, nieces, nephews, and grandson. Bob worked at Oak Ridge National Laboratory for 25 years as an Air Quality Control Specialist in the Energy Division. He was especially proud of his work on various clean coal projects. Bob enjoyed a long-standing culinary relationship with his "Lunch Bunch", Bo, Keith, Marty, Mikhail, and Stas. He graduated from Pennsylvania State University with both a B.S. and M.S. in meteorology. He chose a career in meteorology after working on the weather merit badge for his Eagle Scout award. While at Penn State, Bob was an enthusiastic member of! the Theta Chi fraternity. He played trombone in the Penn State Blue Band, Washington Redskins Marching Band, and the Oak Ridge Community Band. He spent the past year fulfilling a lifelong dream of traveling to all 50 states; he also traveled to Europe, South Africa, Japan and Indonesia. Always up for an adventure, he enjoyed yearly hikes up Mt. LeConte with his wife and friends Dave and Sarah. He was also working on a personal best-time for running up and back to the summit of Mt. LeConte via his favorite trail, Alum Bluff. He canoed the Boundary Waters, went on safari in Africa, took his family on many road trips (some with surprising consequences), and geocached. Bob was a dedicated runner, rower, and skier. He volunteered with the Oak Ridge Rowing association and enjoyed participating in crew events. He was in the Knoxville Track Club and successfully ran the half marathon. He was a ten-year member of the MHUGA Rafting Association (�uno mas!). He was nurtured spiritually during his childhood and youth in the Presbyterian faith. Following graduation from Houghton College, he taught school for several years. Then, he decided to enter pastoral ministry of the Methodist Church, preparing at Colgate-Rochester Divinity School. He was a person of ecumenical mind and spirit, and for 38 years, he pastored a total of 35 small rural churches in New York and Tennessee. In 1979, he retired from the Holston Conference of the United Methodist Church and made his home in Gatlinburg for 16 years, before moving to Knoxville in 1995. In addition, he was an avid gardener since his teenage years and developed a talent for oil painting later in life. He loved his family very much and will be greatly missed by all who knew him, including special friend! s Lee Hokaj, Sam Miller, and Pat Boatright. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Stella Lee (Ellis) Pasel.
