Judge Jenkins was born in Knoxville on April 23, 1936 to Erby Jenkins and his wife Nell. His father practiced with his uncle, Aubrey, and Ray H. Jenkins in the famed firm of Jenkins & Jenkins. Judge Jenkins attended Central High School and then the University of Tennessee where he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity and was class President in 1954. He received his law degree from the University of Tennessee in 1959 and was named in the Order of the Coif. He was Editor-in-Chief of the Law Review. He was appointed Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Tennessee. He has regaled many of his friends with stories of his prosecutions of moonshiners during his tenure. After the Republican Party lost the 1960 election, Judge Jenkins went into practice with his dad, uncle and Ray H. Jenkins in the firm of Jenkins & Jenkins. At the time of his election to the bench in 1982, he was in practice as a solo pract! itioner. He also practiced with Rom Meares. He took the oath of office on September 1, 1982 and was re-elected three more times. September 1, 2007 is the twenty-fifth anniversary of his ascension to the bench. He became the Chief Judge of the Knox Criminal Court upon retirement of Judge Balitsaris in 1989. Judge Jenkins was a member of the Tennessee Judicial Conference and was member of its Rules Committee. He was a member emeritus of American Inns of Court, Hamilton Burnett Chapter, as well as a former member of the Great Smoky Mountain Conservation Association. Judge Jenkins was a member of the Sons of the Revolution. He was a thirty-second degree Scottish Rite of the Freemasons at the Bright Hope Chapter 557. He was in the Kerbela Shriners and the Royal Order of Jesters, Court 057. He was a brother in Sigma Chi fraternity. He, along with Judge James Jarvis, Lou Woolf and John Lockridge, was a charter member of the Order of the Orange. A talented musician in his own right! , Judge Jenkins was a member of the Knoxville's Musicians Asso! ciations . Indicative of his intellect, he was a member of Mensa. He was a member of the bar associations of Knoxville, Tennessee and the American Bar Association. Judge Jenkins leaves his wife, Michele and stepson Robert Carter Ball, his wife Elizabeth; daughter Lee Ann Jenkins Workman and her husband Mark; son Ray Hal Jenkins and his wife Belynda; and daughter Linda Miriam Jenkins Hatcher and her husband Mark. NICELY, JOE KEITH - 49, died August 17, 2007, at his home in Barrow, Alaska. Joe was born August 1, 1958, and spent his youth in South Knoxville. He was preceded in death by: father, Billy K. Nicely; grandparents, H.G. and Janie Nicely, Curtis and Della Bridgewater, and an uncle Elden R. Nicely. He is survived by: his wife, Sarah M. Nicely along with children, Megan, Mackenzee, Melissa and Madison Nicely, and Jonathon Atos. He leaves other family, including his mother, Betty and her husband Charles Glass; sister, Cindy Thompson and her husband, Dr. Tom C. Thompson. Surviving uncle is Clarence (Buddy) Bridgewater and aunts, Nancy Bridgewater and Alice Nicely. Nieces and nephews include: Blaire Young, Katherine and Will Thompson, cousins and extended family in Tennessee and Alaska. Joe was a devoted father and tireless contributor to his community in Barrow, above the arctic circle. He was employed by the Barrow Utilities and Electric Cooperative and attended Calvary Bible Bap! tist Church in Barrow. "POP" - age 87, went to his eternal home in Heaven, Friday, August 24, 2007 at Maryville Health Care. He was a member of Rocky Hill Baptist Church, retired from K-Trans, and a veteran of WWII. Pop was a devoted Christian family man, true friend to many, great storyteller and avid gardener. His fondest memories are of times spent with family and with best friend, Claude Hickman and son Claude Jr. on many rabbit hunts with their beagles. Preceding her in death were her parents, Alexander and Rose Hamerman, and brothers, Samuel and Abraham Hamerman. In addition to her husband of 66 3/4 years, surviving her are: daughters, Judy Johnson of New Jersey and Harriet Spear of Nashville, and son Alan Spear, daughter-in-law Beverly and granddaughter Hayley of Virginia; sister, Rhoda Phillips and niece Vikki Siciliano (Tony) of New York and their four children, and niece Alex Phillips of Oregon. Hilda, whose middle name, Joy, embodied the spirit with which she lived every day, approached life with a "Smell the Roses" philosophy and blessed others with her smile, warmth and interest in them. She loved to read, cook and sew, and she said that being a good wife and mother were her proudest accomplishments. When her children were young, she read to them every night, generating a lifelong interest in reading, a! nd volunteered as a Camp Fire Girl leader, Cub Scout supporter, and a PTA participant. She loved animals, plants and flowers. She received her RN degree at age 50, after which she worked in Oncology at New York's Mt. Sinai Hospital, a Burn Treatment Center at Pennsylvania's Chester-Crozier Hospital and an Alabama Hospice program. A devoted wife, Hilda moved often to support her husband's engineering career. Born and raised in New York, she and David also lived in Washington, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Quebec, Canada, Alabama and Tennessee. Always wanting to help others, Hilda chose to donate her body to Vanderbilt Medical School. A memorial celebration of her life will be held at the St. Paul Senior Living Community, 5031 Hillsboro Road, Nashville, TN at 2:00 pm on Saturday, September 8th, followed by a gathering in the drawing room. STEWART, SARAH MARGARET - age 84, her valiant fight over, went to join her heavenly family on August 27, 2007. She was born to Newton Benjamin Lewis and Mary Frances White Lewis on July 24, 1923 in the green hills of Monroe County, Tennessee. She was the granddaughter of David Millard Lewis and Margaret Cline Lewis and Newton Jasper White and Sarah Jane Witt White. She moved to Etowah, Tennessee as a child and lived most of her life there. She resided in Cleveland, Tennessee at the time of her passing. She was preceded in death by: her parents and grandparents; by her husbands, Maurice Rowland, Raymond Wilson and Pulaskia Stewart; brother, William A. White; daughter, Frances Sue Wilson; granddaughter, Robin Wilson; stepson, Lee Wilson. Her brother, Henry F. Lewis of Dallas, Texas survives her. Her surviving children are: daughter, Patricia Chambers and son-in-law Bill Chambers of Madisonville, Tennessee; daughter, Jean Barr and son-in-law, Jim Barr of Philadelphia, Tennessee! ; son, Tony Wilson and daughter-in-law, Joyce Wilson, of Georgetown, Tennessee; son Jeff Wilson and daughter-in-law, Shirley Wilson of Cleveland, Tennessee; son Blake Stewart and daughter-in-law Paula Stewart of Cleveland, Tennessee. She is also survived by: stepsons, Herbert Wilson of Inkster, Michigan, Ronnie Wilson of Nashville, Tennessee, Billy Wilson of Morristown, Tennessee, Bobby Wilson of Williamsburg, Kentucky, Eddie Wilson of Clarksville, Tennessee, Charles Stewart of Englewood, Tennessee, and Mark Stewart; one stepdaughter, Judy Stewart survives her. She was a devout Christian, a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She retired from Mountain View Elementary School as a cook. She worked as a cook in several restaurants in Etowah and Athens. She worked at the Y12 Plant at Oak Ridge during World War II. She love ! quilting and gardening; she loved to play sports in her youth ! and was an avid Atlanta Braves fan. She is a descendant of several pioneer families of Polk, McMinn, and Monroe Counties. She was a longtime member of Calvary Baptist Church in Etowah and recently attended the Maple Street Baptist Church in Cleveland. She enjoyed her friends at church as well as those at the Etowah and Cleveland Senior Centers and at North Cleveland Towers. All who knew her will miss her smiling face and good-natured wit.
