    2. BAKER, EDWARD E. "EDDIE" - 86, of Pigeon Forge went home to be with his Lord on Thursday August 23, 2007. Eddie served in the United States Navy during WWII and was most proud for taking part in the D-Day invasion at Normandy, where he survived the sinking of his battleship. In 1947 he came to Gatlinburg, where he became a pioneer in the Gatlinburg Candy business. Eddie owned and operated Bakers' Candy for nearly a half century. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Maples Baker, and son, Mark Baker. Survivors: sons: Gary Baker and wife Vickie, John Baker and wife Carol; grandchildren: Joe Baker and wife Jessi, David, Caity, Logan, and Rebecca Baker; great grandchildren: Joseph Andrew Baker, Jr., Eleanor Jessup Baker; several nieces and nephews; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, as well as many loving friends including special friend Lynne Webb. Maxwell (Max) was born December 1, 1949, in Knoxville, Tennessee, the son of Earl and Mary Ellen Cox Branum. He was a graduate of Rich East High School (1968), Park Forest, IL and Western Illinois University (1973), Macomb, IL. He completed post-graduate studies at Governors State University, Park Forest South, IL and Winston-Salem State, Winston-Salem, NC. Max was an accomplished teacher, wrestling coach, soccer coach and football coach. He was an avid athlete excelling in wrestling at Rich East and at Western Illinois University. His parents and his grandparents (Elvin and Gertrude Branum and Rule and Cecilia Rhoads Cox) preceded him in death. He is survived by his brothers Timothy Cox Branum and Rexford Alan Branum; his sisters Pamela Rule Sluder, Rosemary Palmer, Penelope Diane Branum, and Alice Paige Pennington; his nieces and nephews Tosha Branum Champs, Jennifer Connelly, Mary Ellen Chaffi! n, Sarah Simmons, Andrew Sluder, Patrick Sluder, Scott Branum Palmer and Brentt Earl Palmer; and great-nephews Bryan Sluder, Charles Thomas Connelly and Jacob Branum Palmer. GARDNER, WILLIAM BRYSON, SR. - age 75 passed away at home on August 23, 2007. He was born in Manchester, Georgia on April 24, 1932, and was a long-time resident of Knoxville and member of Church Street United Methodist Church. The son of a Methodist minister, he spent his childhood living in parsonages in towns throughout north Georgia. After graduation from Emory University with a degree in mathematics, he worked for the National Security Agency in Washington, D.C., initially as a civilian and then after recruitment into the US Army during the Korean War. Next, he spent 18 months working as an engineer in the Kuwaiti oil fields for the French company Schlumberger. He returned to Georgia and joined IBM as a systems analyst. Upon relocation to Knoxville in 1964, he spent much of his time with IBM working on the computer systems at ORNL. He retired from IBM in 1984 but continued his work on computers with TVA until 2003. After his final retirement, he stayed busy with a variet! y of activities. He particularly enjoyed taking classes at UT in a wide range of disciplines, traveling, and spending time with his family and friends. He was an active member of the Knoxville Technical Society and also enjoyed the weekly meetings of the UT Science Forum. He is preceded in death by his parents the Reverend William Howard and Katherine Bryson Gardner. Survivors include his wife of 45 years Vicky Allen Gardner; sister Bonnie and her husband the Reverend John Barnes of Lake Junaluska, N.C.; and brother Charles and his wife Betsy of Asheville, N.C. His children and their spouses are Kathy and Joe Simpson of Knoxville, Deborah and Scott Lockett of Alexandria, VA, Jamie and Bryson Gardner of San Francisco, CA, and Meg and David Elam of Knoxville; and grandchildren Bryson, Tindell, and Sander Lockett and Campbell and Decker Elam. GEIS, GEORGE E. age 90 of Dandridge, TN passed away Wednesday, August 22, 2007 at the Heritage Center of Morristown. He was born, June 26, 1917 and raised in Royal Oak, MI, the son of the late George E. and Regina Ehnis Geis. He graduated from Royal Oak High School in 1934 and went on to serve with the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II and upon his return from service, he spent many years in the dry cleaning business, eventually opening his own dry cleaning service with his wife Ann. He later entered the banking industry where he served as a officer and branch manager for the Manufactures National Bank of Rochester, MI for 23 years. Upon his retirement in July 1979, he and Ann moved to Dandridge, TN where they have enjoyed their remaining years. George was an active member of the Dandridge First United Methodist Church where he served 10 years as church treasurer and 19 years in the Senior Adult Choir and was also a member of the Dandridge Lions Club. He was preceded in d! eath by his beloved wife of 60 years, Ann C. Dunlop Geis. He is survived daughter: Marianne Schneider of Pompano Beach, FL; son: Craig Geis of Pensacola, FL; sister: Jeanette Hilton of Holiday, FL; brother-in-law: Gerald Dunlop; sisters-in-law: Marjorie Dunlop and Mary Dunlop; several nieces and nephews. He was also active in the Knoxville Table Tennis Club and played tuba in the Oak Ridge Community Band.
