    2. ARMSTRONG, CHARLES DENNY - age 83, of Farragut, passed away Wednesday, December 19, 2007. He was a longtime member of Gillespie Ave. Baptist Church where he served as deacon. Mr. Armstrong proudly served his country in the U.S. Army and Army Reserve for 39 years, seeing action during World War II in the Battle of the Bulge and teaching ROTC courses at the University of Tennessee. He achieved the rank of Colonel for his dedicated service. He earned undergraduate and Masters degrees in Engineering from the University of Tennessee and worked until his retirement as an engineer for TVA and post-retirement as an engineering consultant for SAIC in Oak Ridge. Mr. Armstrong was a member of the Optimist Club. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Jefferson City, TN. Dr. Muncy graduated from Lincoln Memorial University and UT Medical School. After an internship at Knoxville General Hospital he did residencies in cardiology and internal medicine at Methodist Hospital, Dallas, TX and Tufts University, Boston, MA. He served 2 1/2 years in the US Army during World War II, 22 months of which were spent in the Pacific Theater. He was in medical practice in Jefferson City for forty years. Dr. Muncy was active in civic and community affairs throughout his life. He served as a Jefferson City Councilman, President of the Jefferson City Chamber of Commerce, President of the Tennessee Heart Association, first and fifth President of the Carson-Newman College Community Council, among many other activities. After he retired, he and his wife, ! Jean traveled extensively throughout the world and to all fifty states. Dr. Muncy is the author of two books and numerous book chapters and articles which were published in various journals newsletters, and newspapers. He was an accomplished photographer. He had a lifelong interest in history and was the official Jefferson County Historian from 1995 to 2006. Special honors which Dr. Muncy has received include Jefferson Award, Covenant Health's Platinum Award, Civitan Award for Outstanding Service, Modern Woodmen of American Award for Community Service, induction into Lincoln Memorial University's Literal Hall of Fame and Professional Hall of Fame, Rotary International Award, Humanitarian Award from Douglas-Cherokee Economic Authority, Commendation Award from Governor Sundquist. He is listed in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who in Medicine and Health Care. She was born in Albemarle, NC on March 18, 1927 to Louise Eanes and John Franklin Colbert, formerly of Knoxville TN and New Smyrna Beach, Fla. and was their only daughter. She attended twelve different schools before graduating from high school at age 16 as her father was on construction work mostly at TVA dams. She attended Florida Southern University and then the University of Tennessee earning a BS degree in business administration with honors in 1947. Upon graduation she accepted employment with the FBI working in Knoxville, Los Angeles, CA, and Washington D.C. She met her husband, John A. Russell Jr. (Jack) in Washington where they were married in 1951. In 1954 they moved to Oak Ridge when Jack accepted employment with ORNL and they lived there until her death. She worked at Emory Valley Center for more than 10 years as an office assistant and standards ! coordinator where she helped obtain their original state certification. After her formal retirement she performed part time secretarial services for many non profit organizations. She was active in her church and in community affairs serving as a Girl Scout leader and trainer, a volunteer with Aid to Distressed Families of Appalachian Counties, the editor of the League of Women's Voter newsletter, and other organizations. For several years she served as treasurer of the Concord Yacht Club, and contributed much to the development of a youth learning to sail program. She was an avid sailor helping her children and others to enjoy the sport. In addition to sailing she enjoyed traveling, hiking, camping, ham radio, knitting and homemaking. She was preceded in death by her parents John and Louise Colbert, and their daughter, Rebecca Louise Russell Carrico. Loving survivors are her husband, Jack; their sons, John A. Russell, III (Andy) and Daniel C. Russell; their wives, Derlaine!
