Dr. Freeman was a minister in the North Alabama Conference of the United Methodist Church & served in several cities in the northern part of Alabama where Mrs. Cantwell grew up as a child. She attended Birmingham Southern College & was graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1940, receiving her Master's Degree there in 1941. On October 29, 1943 she married a young pilot in the Army Air Corps, Frank Pierce Cantwell, in Shreveport, Louisiana, & after World War II they returned to Morristown, Tennessee, his native home in 1950. Since that time Mrs. Cantwell has been an active civic-minded member of the City of Morristown. In 1951 she helped organize the kindergarten at First United Methodist Church & served as its first Director for five years. For over 50 years she has been active in the church as a Sunday school teacher, member of the Administrative Boar! d, work area chairman & active member of the United Methodist Women. She served in many capacities in that organization & served as President from 1974 through 1976. In 1976 she began a four year term as President of the Morristown District of the United Methodist Women & from 1981 served on the Board of Directors of the Holston Conference United Methodist Women as Mission Coordinator for Christian Social Involvement. In 1974 she helped organize the Altar Guild & served as its first Chairman. In the early 1960's she served as President of the United Methodist Church Women & with four other local members worked to organize the first state certified daycare system in Morristown (& one of the first in the state). She served as the first Chairman of the Board & then served on the Advisory Committee to Daycare in the State of Tennessee Welfare Advisory Committee from 1968 through 1976. In 1980 she was asked to serve as President of the Morristown District United Methodist Church! es Council on Ministries for four years and at the same time w! as Vice Chairperson of the Holston Conference of the United Methodist Church's Council on Ministries. She was a delegate to Holston Annual Conference from 1976 through 1984. In the late 1970's she served on the Board of Directors of the International Nursing Services, a training school in Atlanta that brings nurses from third world countries who come to the US, to study immunization treatment for childhood diseases and diseases indigenous to the nurses' countries. In the early 1980's she was elected to represent Morristown on the Regional Library Board and served those two terms as President. In 1985 she and her husband, who was retiring, decided to spend winters in Florida. A fifty year member of the Ladies Reading Circle, she served as President in 1966. She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years Frank Pierce Cantwell, parents, her brother Dr. Arthur M. Freeman, Jr., and a sister. She is survived by three children, Frank P. He retired in 1987, he and Jean moved to Knoxville, Tennessee where they enjoyed many years of retired life. He was an active member of All Saints Catholic Church. He was also active in many organizations including the Cedar Bluff Chapter of AARP, West Knox Civitan Club and was one of the founders of the Knox County Alliance of Seniors, an organization that promoted and was responsible for developing the Strang Senior Center. Henderson and several cousins. She was a native of Knoxville. Betty moved to Morristown in 1960 when Mack finished UT Law School and set up his practice in Morristown, his home town. Betty worked for South Central Bell as a service representative, retiring after 32 years. Betty was active in many community affairs, she was appointed Hamblen County Memorial Chairman for the American Cancer Society and served for 35 years. She volunteered to help Knoxville Bell South, where they established the first Pioneer Chapter in Hamblen County. Betty was a Pilot Club member and served as! pilot president. Betty also helped establish the Senior Citizens and served on the first board of directors for the Senior Citizens. Betty worked for and received a grant to establish a life line to serve the homes of the elderly. She checked the batteries each month at the hospital for over 31 years. Betty also delivered meals on wheels. Betty was a nominee for Morristown First lady in 1971. Betty was a member of the First United Methodist Church since 1961. After retirement from the Air Force, he worked for the Corps of Engineers in Omaha, Nebraska then returned to his beloved mountains in 1997. Throughout his life he was a devoted amateur radio operator, most recent call sign WA0ZUR, serving many during local and national disasters by providing much needed communications support. He was also active with the Military Affiliate Radio Systems (MARS), passing messages to families from soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines who were away from home. Mr. Leatherwood was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth; daughter, Kathleen; and son, Robert.
