The first child of Joseph Clyde Fowler and Elizabeth Dewey Baker Fowler, Elizabeth "Betty" Beauford Fowler was born March 1, 1923 in Knoxville, Tennessee. The family lived in the Morningside neighborhood just east of downtown Knoxville, where Betty and six childhood girlfriends became known as the "Morningside Girls." They remained treasured friends for life. Betty stayed busy as a young lady, from ballet and Girl Scouts to swimming and picnicking in the nearby Smokey Mountains, whose beauty she appreciated so much. She was also a member of the Girls' Cotillion Club and a graduate of Knoxville High School. Betty's Father died when she was just 13. She held her Mother in the highest esteem for the selfless hard work and sacrifices she made to ensure that Betty and her brother and sister had every opportunity as children to reach the! ir potential as adults. Betty earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics, with a Child Development emphasis, from the University of Tennessee in 1946. At UT, she was an active member of Chi Omega, and also met her future husband, Bob, the handsome captain of the UT Volunteers football team. Betty and Bob married on December 20, 1946. They made their first home in Bridgeport, Connecticut, while Bob played football for the New York Giants. When he signed with the LA Dons in 1949, they moved to Los Angeles with their first baby, Anne. In 1950 with son Robby on the way, they returned to Connecticut, where they completed their family with the birth of daughter Libby in 1953. In 1957, business opportunities brought Betty and Bob to Lake City, where they made a home for life. Betty dedicated herself to rearing their children, and she was involved in their activities from Girl Scout leader to Tiger football supporter. After the children entered school, Betty began a 30! -year teaching career at Eastside Elementary, primarily teachi! ng secon d grade with a focus on reading. As a phonics teacher, Betty's unwavering goal was to instill a love for reading in all of her students. This was so important to Betty that she returned to Eastside as a remedial reading specialist for seven years after her retirement. She was a devoted member of First Presbyterian Church for 50 years. Betty participated actively, helping with Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, teaching Sunday School, and serving on the Worship Committee, Mission Committee and as church greeter. She performed these and many other charitable acts for her Lord with deep faith and love. She was preceded in death by her daughter Anne Dobelstein Michael in 1982. Betty's sister, Ann Fowler Ragsdale, also preceded her. Surviving Betty is her husband of 61years, Bob, whom she often affectionately referred to as "Dobe." Also surviving are: her children, Robby (Kitty) of Peoria, Illinois, and Libby (Tom) Clary of Lake City; her grandchildren, who loved their "GranBetty" dearl! y, Lara (Michael) Wehrli, Alex Michael, Drew Michael, Kate (Jason) Dobson, Clay Dobelstein, Liz-Anne (Fabio) Silva, Josh Clary, Zach (Candace) Clary, Maddie Dobelstein and Philip Dobelstein; her two great-grandsons, Reid and Cole Wehrli; her brother, Joe (Sue) Fowler, of Knoxville and many nieces and nephews. Betty was an independent thinker, always current on local and world events, which she enjoyed discussing and debating, with politics one of her favorite topics. A favorite hobby was studying her family lineage and sharing the family's long-documented history with her descendents. Nothing was more important to Betty than her family and friends. Without fail, she was there to lend her support and wisdom. A woman of style and grace, she touched the lives of many, and her spirit and quiet dedication to doing the right thing will always be remembered-and admired. A memorial service celebrating Betty's life will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, November 28 at First Presbyteri! an Church, 697 SW Baya Drive, Lake City, with Reverend Roy Mar! tin offi ciating.
