Mr. Atkins was a member of the Christ of the Cumberland's Lutheran Church in Harrogate, TN, WWII Navy Veteran and member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars; he worked for GMC in Pontiac, MI and was a member the UAW. RAINES, THOMAS RAY, SR. - age 85, of Knoxville, passed away Friday, November 16, 2007 at Continuum Courtyards in Inskip surrounded by family and loving caretakers after a long battle with cancer and Parkinson's disease. Tom grew up in the Lincoln Park neighborhood and graduated from old Knoxville High School. He served in the European Theater during World War II as a Master Sergeant in the United States Army Air Corps, arriving on Normandy Beach shortly after D-Day. He led a team of soldiers who repaired or recovered downed aircraft. Known to friends as T.R. or Tom, he retired after 32 years of service as an engineering designer from Oak Ridge National Laboratories. He was a life-long resident of the Lincoln Park and Inskip communities who enjoyed helping friends and family, serving in his church, playing golf with his family and friends, and working in the yard. He served his community as a Boy Scout Scoutmaster, as an election poll volunteer, as well as a volunteer for Mea! ls on Wheels. He was skilled with his hands and constructed the house on Freemason Street where he lived for many years. Tom had a creative side, and designed several houses for family and friends and in his later years, he enjoyed taking snapshots of friends and visitors. He was most recently a member of First Cumberland Presbyterian Church and was a former member of Lincoln Park Baptist Church. When unable to attend his church, he would attend the worship services held at Continuum. He will be remembered as a cheerful, positive, and generous man who always put the needs of others before his own. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Rowena Bridges Raines; first wife, Mary Alice O'Baugh Raines in 1983; and sister, Irene Starkey. She was a life-long member of Pilot Mountain Missionary Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by: her husband, Gene Underwood; parents, Will and Pearlie Goodman; brothers, Johnny, Lonnie, Willard, and Dempsey Goodman. She is survived by: her son, Larry Underwood and wife, Mickey; daughters and sons-in-law, Peggy Smith and husband, Gary, and Gail Walker and husband, Sam; grandchildren, Kelly Thorton, Stacey Ridenour, Alicia Pruitt, Emily Gibson, Tim Vespie, and Cale Crouch; she is survived by nine great-grandchildren; sisters, Savannah Garrett and Annie Sexton both of Lancing, Clina Bowling of Rockwood, and Mary Nell Hall of Atlanta. WALLACE, WILLIAM LEE, JR. - age 67, formerly of St. Louis, Missouri, passed away November 11, 2007. He lived the last few years in Knoxville, Tennessee with 2 of his children. He was a retiree of McDonnell Douglas/Boeing in St. Louis. He was a longtime member of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers in Hazelwood, MO. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force. Preceded in death by his father William Lee Wallace, Sr. and his mother Erma Kathleen Wallace.
