BRINEGAR, ELIZABETH (LIBBY) CAROLYN GILLESPIE - was released from this life Thursday, October 25, 2007, after a long illness. She was preceded in death by her parents, J.C. (Jesse) Gillespie and Beulah Grant Gillespie; and her husband, Haywood (Woody) Cumbie Brinegar. She is survived by her daughters, Lisa (Tom) Brinegar Slagle of Knoxville and Barbara (Phill) Brinegar Burgess of Franklin; grandsons, Beau Burgess, Woody Burgess and Jackson Slagle; and sisters, Martha Gillespie McKune, Cape Town, South Africa and Barbara Gillespie Jarrett of Maryville. Born in 1930, Libby grew up in Maryville, graduated from Maryville High School, attended Randolph-Macon College in VA and graduated from the University of Tennessee where she was a member or Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority. She was a devoted daughter, wife, mother, volunteer, and teacher. She gave time to the community through many organizations including PTA, the Girl Scouts of America, Jr. Service League, Jr. Chilhowee Club, New Pr! ovidence Presbyterian Church, and The Blount County Girl's Club. Mrs. Brinegar taught sixth grade at Sam Houston Elementary and Maryville Middle school. She was a member of New Providence Presbyterian Church. Libby lived her life as a giver, giving of her sweet, sweet spirit to her family, many friends, students, church and community. The family would like to thank the many care givers who became like her family in the last years of her life during her illness. HOLLEY,OTTIS DEAN ESTELLA MARIE COLEMAN - eternal life on the morning of Tuesday, October 30, 2007. Ottis Dean, as she was affectionately known, was born in Newport, Tennessee to the late Samuel Henry and Estella Payne Coleman. She was the second of four children, all of whom preceded her in death. She was the oldest surviving descendant of Isaac and Charlotte Dockery. Ottis Dean moved with her parents to Jefferson City, TN when she was nine years old and remained there as a resident for her entire life. She received her education at Nelson Merry School in Jefferson City, TN; Tennessee State Agricultural and Industrial University in Nashville, TN; and Howard University in Washington, D.C. She taught for many years at Nelson Merry School and retired from teaching at Rush Strong Elementary School in Straw Plains, TN. At an early age she joined Boyds Chapel United Methodist Church and remained a devoted member for the duration of her life. During this time, she served in many p! ositions to include the church treasurer, which se loved. She also held memberships in the United Methodist Women; Keenagers, the Jefferson City Senior Citizen Group, The Retired Teachers Association of Tennessee and a lifetime member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Ottis Dean enjoyed traveling and seeing new places. She was very appreciative of all things and saw beauty in everything. He was a graduate of Young High School and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He served in the United States Army as a First Lieutenant. He was a member of The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd where he served on the Vestry, and also served on the Vestry of St. James Episcopal Church where he grew up. He was a founding member of Wood Brothers Construction, Wood Realty, and Lawler-Wood LLC. He was a member of the Home Builders Association of Greater Knoxville, Home Builders Association of Tennessee, and served over 20 years as an elected National Director of the National Association of Home Builders. In October of 2000 he was inducted into the Building Industry of Tennessee Hall of Fame. He served as a member of the Alcoaway Optimist Club, serving as President of the organization in 1976. He had also served as chairman of the Alcoaway Athletic Association, a comm! unity group working with the children of the area. Wood coached little league football and baseball. He had been a Commissioner of Knox Chapman Utility District for over 25 years, serving at one point as Treasurer for the District. He served as an honorary member of the Codes Committee for the City of Knoxville, and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Elks, Better Business Bureau, The UT Alumni Association, and a past member of Knoxville Junior Chamber of Commerce. World War II led her to return home to Atlanta. After World War II, Ann and L.C. lived in the East Knoxville area on East Fifth Avenue, Wilson Avenue, Lansing Avenue and Larigo Drive before retiring to Seymour, Tennessee on Chisum Trail. A devoted and loving mother and grandmother, Ann raised her two sons with strict Christian values and shared her love for so many others throughout her life. Ann excelled with a passion for cooking, keeping a spotless, clean home, and quilt making. All visitors were t! reated with that old style southern hospitality and her Georgia accent just added to the charm you enjoyed hearing. Ann was known far and wide for her great cooking, resulting in the most of the family reunions occurring in their home.
