My sister-in-law in Dayton, Ohio sent the following obituary to me. I do not know in which newspaper it appeared. The deceased was a second cousin to my husband, who knew him while growing up in nearby Fentress Co., Tennessee. (Fentress and Morgan Counties are next door neighbors.) Bertram BERTRAM, Sam A. -- Born in Sunbright, TN, January 14, 1923, Passed Away November 11, 2007, after a lengthy illness. He was at Home under Hospice Care. Mr. Bertram served in the Merchant Marines During WWII, Where he served on a Ship named the Armand Considere, (A Concrete Ship) from Feb. 1943 to 1945. Mr. Bertram carried the rank of 3rd mate. He received a Certificate Of Service, discharge for his service. Later he played baseball in the Mountain States League. He played for such teams as the Oakridge Bombers, Newport Canners, Crossville Blues, and the Jamestown Reds, of which all were located in Tennessee. He worked for the Dayton School Board, as an assistant custodian until his retirement in 1988. During his retirement he spent his time fishing and crafting fishing tackle. Mr. Bertram was preceded in death by his mother, Cassie, father, Benedict, and sister, Vera Katherine. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Willadean, son, Michael J. Sr. and wife Teresa, of Dayton, grandchildren, Michael J. Jr. and Nathaniel J. Bertram both of Tampa Fla., Jason Larson, and wife Angela, of Dayton, Jean Hunley of Dayton, great grandchildren, Angelina, Dustin, Ian. Brother Ronnie Bertram, and wife Wilma, of Oliver Springs, TN; niece Rhonda Scherere, of Planto, IL, nephew, Roger Bertram of Channohon, IL, many cousins and friends.
