Ruby was born and raised on a farm in Maynardville, TN (Kettle Hollow, Union County) along with 7 brothers and 5 sisters. In 1938 her adventurous soul brought her to NYC where she enjoyed her new found freedom from farm life. In 1943 she responded to the poster reading "Uncle Sam Wants You" and enlisted in the Army Air Corps. Sgt. Ruby Cheek served WWII from March 12, 1943 to November 21, 1945. She was awarded the American Theatre Campaign Medal; WAAC Service Medal; Good Conduct and Victory Medal. Ruby loved serving her country and supporting her enlisted brothers. Upon her honorable discharge, she relocated to Boston, MA where she raised two daughters, worked for the Boston Naval Shipyard and retired from the General Services Adm. In 1980. She then retired to her new home in Deltona, Florida where she made many friend! s and enjoyed life for 27 years. Ruby enjoyed the simple pleasures that life offered: dancing, bowling, crossword puzzles, sewing, quilting, gardening and an overwhelming dedication to recycling and passing forward all items that still had value, which reflected her respect and love of this earth that she was born to. She was appreciated by many for her kindnesses, sense of humor and her ability to listen to others with compassion and a non-judgmental attitude. He was devoted to his family, friends and patients. Arvell was an avid hiker and photographer. He was a member of the Fountain City Sportsman's Club and loved Norris Lake.
