Mrs. McClure was born on April 26, 1924 in Whitesburg, Kentucky. Mrs. McClure was an active member of Central Baptist Bearden in Knoxville, when she and her husband relocated to Knoxville from Chattanooga in 1988, until ill health prevented her involvement. Mrs. McClure was a graduate of University of Florida (B.S), University of Chattanooga, (M.S.) with additional course work at University of Tennessee Knoxville. She was a lifelong educator, having begun teaching in a one- room school house in Clay County, Kentucky. Additionally, she taught in Florida, Georgia, and Tennessee for almost 40 years. She was a pioneer Special Educator, instituting special classes and programs in Gainesville, GA and Hamilton County, TN. She also served as a Guidance Counselor, Math teacher, and Homebound teacher in Chattanooga. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Charles "Chuck" McClure who died in 2002, her parents, Judge and Mrs. Charles House White (Nora Sizemore) of Manchester, Kentucky; her brothers, Charles H. White, Jr., and former Kentucky State Representative John E. White of Manchester, KY, and her sister, Betty Lou White Ramsey, of Louisville, Ky. PURDUE, WILLIAM RAY (BILL)- age 56, died Monday, May 14, 2007, at his home in Knoxville after an extended illness caused by complications associated with Lou Gehrig's disease. Bill was born in E. St. Louis, Illinois and his first schooling was at the Illinois School for the Blind in Jacksonville. He later transferred to the Missouri School for the Blind in St. Louis. He became one of the first vision impaired students to be enrolled in the public school system. The family later moved to Kingsport, TN, where his father was Pastor of First Baptist Church. He graduated from Dobyns Bennett High School. He was also a graduate of Carson Newman College. He was known throughout East Tennessee because of his work as a radio "Disc Jockey" at several radio stations. Survivors include wife, Sandra; parents, Dr. William J. and Joyce Purdue of Jefferson City; sister, Ann Bice of Jefferson City; brother, Darrell Purdue of Kidder, Missouri;children, Kristen Cox, John Grasty, Tony Mills; grandchildren; Cody, Robert, Ashley and John Cox, Krymson and Jonathan Grasty, Brittany and Austin Mills; special friends, Mary Mitchell, John Abbott and Earl Barnett of Alabama. Funeral service 8:00 p.m. Thursday at Berry Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Edwin Jones officiating. Family and friends will meet at Jefferson Memorial Gardens in Jefferson City, at 11:00 a.m. Friday for interment services.
