He was a member of Norris United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his daughter Cynthia Kay (Boardman) Jones; parents, Samuel Cleis and Estella Grace (Strait) Boardman; brothers, Gordon C. Boardman and Donald C. Boardman; sisters, Eleanor (Boardman) Benkowski and Betty (Boardman) Weirauch. Doug was born in Glenwood City, Wisconsin. He received his Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Minnesota in 1940, graduating Cum Laude in Forestry. While pursuing his degree, Doug worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps Camp in Milwaukee and Devils Lake, Wisconsin. Doug worked as a junior forester with the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) in Erin, TN, until his induction into the U.S. Army in September 1943. He served in major campaigns in both the European and Pacific Theaters of World War II, and was promoted to Staff Sergeant during that time. His was in the first troop landings in Japan in 1945. Before moving his family to Norris, TN, to work for TVA, Doug also worked with TVA in Paris, TN, and Bristol, TN. He retired in 1973. Active in the Norris United Methodist Church, he sang in the choir, taught Sunday School, and held several church offices; one of which included responsibility for the building of the church's sanctuary. In 1972, Doug was honored as a Fellow in the Society of American Foresters by the President of the United States. He was a lifetime member of the Norris Lions Club, and an avid fisherman and gardener. Besides his wife of 67 years, Geraldine (Brodale) Boardman, Doug is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Spencer Douglas and May Parker Boardman of Norris, TN; son-in-law Michael Maston Jones of Arab, AL; nephew Gordon Charles Boardman of Kalamazoo, MI; grandchildren, Paul Harris Boardman (Lawton), Los Angeles, CA, Benjamin Spencer Boardman (Jennifer) Enterprise, AL, Jason Wesley Boardman, Matthew Maston Jones, April Dawn Peters and Amy Suzanne DeLeonardis (Todd), all of Knoxville, TN; four grandchildren, and several loving nieces and nephews. She never had a doubt about where she would spend eternity and worried that she had lived so long, her friends who had gone before would think she didn't make it. She was born in Savannah, Georgia to the late Thomas E. Warren and Freddie Lee Martin. She is also preceded in death by her two sisters and a brother; grandchild, Brian Butler. She was married for over 50 years to Howard A. Butler who died in 1977. They had three sons, Hal Jr. who died in 1939, Leonard who died in 1999, and Warren. He was born in Etowah, Tennessee on October 2, 1924, the son of the late Joe Madison Clayton and Onye (Rymer) Clayton. Dr. Clayton was raised in Etowah, and served in the US Army during World War II. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Tennessee in 1949, in the field of Agricultural Engineering. He then received a Master of Science degree from the University of Illinois in 1951, and his Doctorate of Philosophy degree from Cornell University in 1962, where he was an NSF Science Faculty Fellow. He taught at the University of Illinois, the University of Connecticut and the University of Massachusetts, where he was Professor and Head of the Department of Food Engineering (which he helped to found). He also served as Visiting Professor, University of Reading, England and National College of Food Technology, Weybridge, Surrey, England in 1970-1971; was a Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Fellow in 1978 at the University of Tokyo and University Hokkaido, Sapporo, Japan; and received the UNAM (National Autonomous University of Mexico) Silver Medal in Mexico City, 1981, in recognition of his leadership in the development of the field of Food Engineering. Dr. Clayton is survived by his beloved wife of sixty-one years, Helen Harris Clayton. He also leaves his loving children, Jeffrey Clayton, of Pleasant Hill, California; Jill Clayton and David Goldin, of Brooklyn, New York; Joel and Brenda Clayton of Raleigh North Carolina; and his four beloved grandchildren, Sarah and William Clayton, and Nicholas and Abigail Goldin. He took a leave from the Boilermakers between 1968 and 1975 to teach at Powell High School where he also coached football and baseball. After retirement, he spent many hours driving and hiking in his beloved Smoky Mountains. For those who knew and loved "Herb", he will be remembered for his faith in God, never ending love for his wife and family, those "baby blues" and practical jokes that he enjoyed. Ada is survived by niece (daughter), Janie Emmert and her husband, Bill of Thorn Grove; sister, Ann Brown of Halls; a special grand-niece, Misty Moore of Thorn Grove; several other nieces and nephews; great-nieces and nephews and a host of great friends. She was a member of Brandville Baptist Church, but regularly attended Jefferson City Church of Christ until her health prevented her from doing so. She was a member of the Thorn Grove Rebecca Lodge #13 and enjoyed painting at the John T. Conner Center, having won many awards for her art work. She also leaves behind her constant animal companions, Snoopy, Baby and Tabby whom she adored. Mr. McNeal's guest book is also available at www.stevensmortuaryinc.com ORWICK, JOHN ROBERT - age 84, of Knoxville (formerly of Memphis), TN, passed away Friday, May 18, 2007, at Brakebill Nursing Home. He was a long-time member of Balmoral Presbyterian Church in Memphis. John was born in Harlem Springs, Ohio, on March 2, 1923, to Ralph and Ida (Smeltz) Orwick. He grew up there, on the family farm. He entered the service during WWII, and served in the 506th Fighter Group of the Army of the United States. His tour took him to Iwo Jima, and at the end of his military career, he ranked corporal. Upon return to the States, John attended Ohio State University on the G.I. Bill, graduating with a Bachelor of Science from the College of Agriculture ('49). His career evolved from sales to credit positions at Federal Fertilizer, then W.R. Grace and Company, culminating in his appointment as general credit manager at Grace, after re-locating to Memphis. John was an avid bowler. He was on several bowling teams (singles and doubles) throughout his adult life, and enjoyed the many lifelong friends he and his wife Betty made through the sport. He also served in various positions in organized bowling, including president of the Memphis Bowling Association, as well as president of the Southern Bowling Congress. He was inducted into the ABC Southern Bowling Congress Hall of Fame in 1996, and was celebrated for his many achievements and dedicated service. Following retirement, John enjoyed tracking the stock market (and "the dogs" and casinos!) and especially traveling to visit family and friends throughout the country-including his former cities/areas of residence: Carrollton, Canton, and Columbus, Ohio; Baltimore, Maryland; and Memphis. His fun-loving, direct and joking nature, compassionate ways and wisdom, as well as his deep loyalty to loved ones will be greatly missed by so many. Often he was referred to as "the comedian" by his granddaughters. John was always willing to listen and lend a hand in times of need. True to his personal style and values in life, he faced illness and multiple degenerative diseases with incredible courage and humor. His patience and gentleness with caretakers and family were truly inspiring. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife of 47 years, Betty LeVon (Errington) Orwick (originally from Tippecanoe County). He is survived by elder daughter Dr. Susan Orwick-Barnes and her husband, Robert "Booder" Barnes, and two grandchildren, JoBeth and Dani Barnes; and younger daughter, Shekinah Errington (née Carol Orwick) and husband, Gary Logan, of Ypsilanti, Michigan; and sister Irene Kail, of North Canton, Ohio and many beloved nieces, nephews, and relatives on both sides of the family. A private memorial service will be held at a later date, at the family gravesite in Lima, Ohio.
