Tom, a true renaissance man, lived a long, happy, and fruitful life. As a professor in Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Tennessee, Tom spent 27 years inspiring the next generation of teachers. His love of poetry and children led him to publish Weeds in Wheels, an annual literary work featuring the best art and literature from school age children in East Tennessee. Pursuing his own literary dreams, Tom authored a book on the history of the Tennessee Derby, the first thoroughbred racing derby in the United States. An avid thoroughbred racing aficionado, Tom fulfilled a lifelong dream by owning and racing several horses during his retirement.
