    3. SMITH, CHARLES ALBERT 'AB', 86, of Oakdale, died Wednesday, July 25, 2007 at his home. He was born Sept. 24, 1920 in Catoosa to Joe S. and Flora Edna Hamby Smith. He was a member of Pine Orchard Baptist Church and a lifetime member of the VFW in Crossville and DAV. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II where he received the Purple Heart and Silver Star for Valor for rescuing another soldier. He was an animal lover who helped the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency with rehabilitating animals who were not able to be released into the wild. He had a way with animals. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Carrie Carter, Ada Summers and Velia Collett; brothers, Julius and Clay Smith. Survivors include wife of 65 years, Evelyn Smith; daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and John Freels, Carol and Phil DePorter; sister and brother-in-law, Cora and Kenneth Ruppe; grandchildren, Sonia Sidlauskas, Ashley Bingham and wife, Amanda, Vickie Miles and husband, Will; great-grandchildren, Nicole Gerber, Laura, Katie, Chelsea and Courtney McLure; sister-in-law, Helen Turner; loving companion, Blackberry; a host of nieces and nephews. The family received friends Friday from 6 - 8 p.m. at Evans Mortuary in Rockwood. The funeral service followed at 8 p.m. in the chapel with Chaplain Randy Lee officiating. Graveside service and interment were Saturday in the Pine Orchard Cemetery with military honors by the Roane County Military Memorial Honor Guard. [Roane County News]
