Tom, a true renaissance man, lived a long, happy, and fruitful life. As a professor in Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Tennessee, Tom spent 27 years inspiring the next generation of teachers. His love of poetry and children led him to publish Weeds in Wheels, an annual literary work featuring the best art and literature from school age children in East Tennessee. Pursuing his own literary dreams, Tom authored a book on the history of the Tennessee Derby, the first thoroughbred racing derby in the United States. An avid thoroughbred racing aficionado, Tom fulfilled a lifelong dream by owning and racing several horses during his retirement. As an active member of the Immaculate Conception parish, Tom participated in several ministries ranging from religious education to lecturing and Eucharistic ministry. Inspired by his Irish roots, Tom co-founded the Irish Heritage Society of Knoxville, a group celebrating all things Irish. Fascinated by his genealogy, Tom identified his lineage back seven generations to mid-1700 Ireland and returned to the land of his roots to reconnect with relatives still living there. He lived for his family, volunteering his time as a coach or administrator as needed. He served as the first Regional Commissioner for Northeast Knoxville AYSO and coached numerous youth soccer and basketball teams. His brilliance, compassion, understanding, wisdom, and friendship will be dearly missed. Tom is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Pat; his sons, Sean and Michael; their wives, Jessica and Carrie; and 5 beloved grandchildren. A Mass to celebrate Tom's life will be held on Saturday, August 11, 2007 at 11 AM at Immaculate Conception Church. Following the Mass, a gathering will be held in the Parish hall.
