[Schubert Funeral Home] ------------- MAUPIN, DOROTHY MARIE, age 92, died on June 23 (2010) at Brakebill Nursing Home in Knoxville. Dorothy was born and raised in the Pine Orchard community, near Oakdale in Morgan County. She was the second of eight children born to Obed and Annie (Kindred) Maupin. She is survived by her sisters Faye Arr of Maryville and Bernice Baker of Monteagle, and she was preceded in death by sisters Hazel Carr, Reba Jones, Lucille Burris, and Marjorie Edington and by her brother, Harvey Maupin. “Dot,” as she was known to most, was cherished by all of her siblings and by her many nieces and nephews. She was known in her younger years for her dark hair with a prominent white streak in front and for her fashionable dresses and dangerously high heels. She very much enjoyed living her life the way she wanted to and set a fine example of independence as a single woman living alone in the Shelbourne Towers Apartments, near the UT campus, in Knoxville for many years. She never married but certainly did not lack opportunities to do so. Among her favorite haunts was the Toddle House on Cumberland Avenue, and she always treated lucky children who were allowed to stay overnight with her to breakfast there. She was also known for saying exactly what she thought and for routinely refusing to do what other people thought she should do. One endearing habit was to use her index finger to poke people in the ribs while she was making an important point during conversation. In summary, to call Aunt Dot’s death the end of an era does not do her justice. She dispensed birthday cards, unsolicited gifts, and love with the appropriate abandon of one who understands how much she is also loved. Dot was also preceded in death by her nephews Steve Maupin, Bryan Carr, and David Burris. She is survived by her nieces Olivia Clark, Anne Carr, Susan Cox, Pam Allred, Sheila Burris, Becky Baker, and Cindy Baker as well as her nephews Barry Maupin, John Carr, Frank Bristow, Hugh Arr, Bob Baker, Joe Baker, Michael Edington, and Douglas Edington. Funeral services will be on Tuesday, June 29, at 2:00 p.m. at Evans Mortuary in Rockwood, with visitation beginning at 1:00 p.m. A brief service will also follow at graveside at the Pine Orchard Baptist Church in Morgan County. The family wishes to express their appreciation to Arbor Terrace Assisted Living on Cross Park Drive in Knoxville, where Dorothy lived for several years, and to the staff at Brakebill Nursing Home.
